These two articles are interesting arguments for the Chromebook. I think the Chromebook in features resembles a portable dumb terminal (e.g. VT100) with a graphical user interface. The fact that all apps and content are stored remotely in the Cloud or on a Mainframe means that students are loggin on remotely not locally. This permits multiple students to share the same unit without surrendering control of their data / content. Also, the IT manager in cooperation with the curriculum specialist (e.g., Teacher, Trainer, etc..) can arrange a set of apps and storage space online. Another result of this approach is that students should be able to access their classwork and assignments offline from home or other sites such as public library PC's. Although their comment about iPad related to no key board, I wonder how much the inability to run Flash or Java is part of the problem.


Although the initial article is brief, it serves as a good starting point which gives six examples why the educators are switching to Chromebooks. It's good food for thought as we continue to move into the Cloud (e.g., Mainframe like enviornments.)

Stampsy is a new iPad app for creating digital content. The steps are easy to follow - add images and text to your page using drag-and-drop method. Change colours or fonts, and design the page as you like.

The result you'll get is a linear presentation with great visual potential, perfect for storytelling purposes.

There is a small inconvenience though - you will need a Facebook account to use the application.

Stampsy is an interesting graphic tool currently for the iPad. It has a few necessry tools such as Headline, Text, Images, Colour Palette, Various Fonts, and best of all it is limited to 10 pages. If Powerpoints were limited to 10 pages I wonder how much real information would be lost? No doubt we'd see the important information. Check it out.

Notes: NOTE: This may be an odd post to include in my streams of suggestions. I plan to cross post it to a couple, so apologies up front to those who read the other Scoop.it sites of mine you see at the upper left of each home page.

This is an important and exciting interview. It reminds me of the book (yes paper book) "The Best Camera Is The One That's With You..." by Chase Jarvis ( http://amzn.to/1djbVwG ). The saturation of smart phone with cameras is phenomenal. Most people of all ages have one. So this applies not only to K-12 education, but also to Higher Ed and Corporate education/training as well. Not that everyone will become an artistic photographer, but that most people have access not only to cameras, but the ability to quickly share those images with their community or publicly. It should be noted that this is not limited to smart phone, but any mobile device like the growing number of tablets with cameras should read this interview as well. Living here near Washington DC I have watched more and more visitors of all ages and many different countries using their mobile phone and tablets instead of carrying around cameras these days.

One point not made in the article, but relevant to learning, note taking, education and training is that these mobile cameras can be used in novel ways to support those activities. There are applications to scan and convert snapped text into searchable content. There are apps that help people track spending with snapshots of receipts. Since I do not drink wine, I take a snap of the label for the wine my wife likes so I know what to get at the store. How about using mobile cameras to document "field trips", or document objects visually, or to shop by emailing a photo of that cabinet or dress to a friend to confirm it is the right one for you? You are only limited by your imagination whether student, instructor, or worker.

How To Capture Ideas at Presentations and Events by Doing Visual Recording on the iPad

Robin Good: Rachel Smith explains in very simple words how you can use your iPad to capture and record visually the key ideas and concepts presented during a lecture, keynote, training class or presentation.

She provides a good round-up of four relevant tools that can be used for this task, analyzing their key pros and cons as well as providing logistic and technical advice on how to best organize and setup yourself for doing visual recording on the iPad.

As similar tools will provide more ready-made icons, templates and patterns available for this kind of real-time idea-capturing, this rare and pioneering visual recording work will begin to catch up even more rapidly.
