Education Outrage: Why are universities so afraid of on line education?

Education Outrage: Why are universities so afraid of on line education? | Distance and Virtual Learning | Scoop.it

Here are four things universities are deathly afraid of:

What if the model that “everyone must go to college” stops being pushed by employers and governments?
What if they simply can no longer charge large tuition fees to students?
What if professors, who at top universities are primarily researchers, were actually made to have teaching be their primary activity?
What if the students stop showing up on campus?

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Disruption?

October 5, 2012 by Jonathan Marks

As a politics professor, I feel I should know something about health policy, but it is mostly dread that made me sign up for Ezekiel Emanuel’s class, Health Policy and the Affordable Care Act, through Coursera. Word is that higher education is about to be disrupted by online providers, like Coursera and Udacity, and their MOOCs (massive open online courses). If students can take political philosophy with Harvard’s Michael Sandel for free, why will they pay to take it with me?

With A New Educational Platform, TED Gives Teachers The Keys To A Flipped Classroom | TechCrunch | Distance and Virtual Learning | Scoop.it

TED is announcing the second phase of its education initiative — a website that lives on TED.com, which is designed to enable teachers to create unique lesson plans around its video content. As TED’s curator Chris Anderson wrote in March, the platform is not meant to build an exhaustive online university, with entire curricula on video. Khan Academy and others are already well down that path. Instead, TED-Ed aims to harness the talent of the best teachers around the globe by giving them tools that spark and facilitate learning.

Today, most educational systems are designed to work from the microscopic to the macroscopic. Students learn facts and figures and tiny fractions of knowledge long before anyone really puts things into a larger context.

Course-Management Companies Challenge MOOC Providers - Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Course-Management Companies Challenge MOOC Providers - Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Distance and Virtual Learning | Scoop.it

Two software companies that sell course-management systems, Blackboard and Instructure, have entered the race to provide free online courses for the masses.

On Thursday both companies plan to announce partnerships with universities that will use their software to teach massive open online courses, or MOOC’s. The companies hope to pull in their own college clients to compete with online-education players like Udacity and Coursera.

Combining Face-to-Face and Online Education

Combining Face-to-Face and Online Education | Distance and Virtual Learning | Scoop.it

I have found that many who dream of online learning somehow imagine a virtual school where the teachers are no more than those who load up the assignments and set up the learning management system. But by taking actual teaching out of the distance learning equation, we are dooming distance learning to mere correspondence course status. And it has the potential to be far greater than any model we have thus far imagined, but only if the tools are used properly and if the balance of offline interaction and online learning are aligned.
