sergeantpol's insight:

The bootblack painted shoes of passersby on the street, usually wandering in various cafes and shops but also in various parts of the roads to get customers.
The apparatus was a wooden packing with side pockets that had paint and brushes and everything else needed for polishing shoes. The packing it with a long strap for carrying the shoulder of glaze and a chair to sit in one place to another to go. The customer put his shoe in the middle of packing, on a bronze base shaped upturned bottom shoe. Bootblack and did his job with fast movements: cleaning, painting, polishing. But always placed ahead of two paperboard or hard plastic on the side of the shoe, so as not to stain the socks of the customer. The profession does not exist today, and yet only in Omonia Square in Athens will encounter any itinerant glaze, which is something curious tourists.
