Collaborative Learning for the Digital Age - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Collaborative Learning for the Digital Age - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Disrupting Higher Ed | Scoop.it

I want to suggest a different way of seeing, one that's based on multitasking our attention—not by seeing it all alone but by distributing various parts of the task among others dedicated to the same end. For most of us, this is a new pattern of attention. Multitasking is the ideal mode of the 21st century, not just because of information overload but also because our digital age was structured without anything like a central node broadcasting one stream of information that we pay attention to at a given moment.

Online Education Is Everywhere. What’s the Next Big Thing? | Wired Campus - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Disrupting Higher Ed | Scoop.it

Like many other colleges, Southern New Hampshire University is experiencing an online-education boom. But look under the hood of its digital learning operation, and what you’ll find in many ways resembles traditional education: students forking over substantial tuition payments to study in small, professor-led classes that last from eight to 11 weeks.

So what innovation will put that model out of business?

Answering that question will be the responsibility of a new two-person “innovation team” at Southern New Hampshire.

It’s an unusual job description: Disrupt the disruptive innovation.

Recession Has Lit the Fuse on Explosive Student Debt | Truthout

Recession Has Lit the Fuse on Explosive Student Debt | Truthout | Disrupting Higher Ed | Scoop.it

Another PAINFUL article on the indentured servitude that many students enter when they take out student loans.

The rise in student borrowing is a longtime trend, but things have clearly gotten worse in the recession. A lot of it is because of decisions schools are making. In a recent Atlantic Monthly article, Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus explain that higher tuition — paid for by student loans — “keeps most colleges going.”

As Roosevelt Institute Fellow Dorian Warren reminded his host Melissa Harris-Perry on MSNBC, “When we were in college, Melissa, Pell Grants paid almost half our college in the 90s. Now Pell Grants barely cover a quarter. It’s all student loans.” Grants used to cover two-thirds of financing an education; now two-thirds comes from loans. Post-recession, the government is looking to shrink that even more.

An Old Story With a Dangerous New Twist - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education

An Old Story With a Dangerous New Twist - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Disrupting Higher Ed | Scoop.it

With higher education increasingly hard to pay for in the current economic crisis, it can no longer serve as a safety net for the middle class and a source of economic mobility for society. Nor, given the political attacks on academe, can our colleges maintain the intellectual excellence, diversity, and freedom that once made them the envy of the world.

The situation might not be so dire if higher education did not also have to counter a so-called reform movement that seeks to transform it into a research-and-training facility that operates as an auxiliary of the corporate sector...

The national dialogue about reforming education needs to move from agenda-ridden and internecine sniping toward a real conversation about meaningful structural change in the education system. ACE | Higher Education in Tumultuous Times | Free Download | Disrupting Higher Ed | Scoop.it

Now available from the American Council on Education (ACE), Higher Education in Tumultuous Times: A Transatlantic Dialogue on Facing Market Forces and Promoting the Common Good is based on the discussions of 30 college and university leaders at the 12th Transatlantic Dialogue, held in June 2010.

The essay analyzes prevalent challenges facing higher education today and finds many colleges are struggling to adapt to changing and increasing demands from governments and diverse student bodies. These demands are complicated by issues of public distrust as well as the ever-evolving climate of global politics and the economy. New technologies change just as rapidly, and institutions must constantly adapt to stay on the cutting-edge.

The Transatlantic Dialogue will convene again in 2012.

College Tech Goes Mobile - Almanac of Higher Education 2011 - The Chronicle of Higher Education

College Tech Goes Mobile - Almanac of Higher Education 2011 - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Disrupting Higher Ed | Scoop.it

College technology went on the move in the 2010-11 academic year, venturing into mobile platforms like smartphones and tablets such as the iPad. The devices were used within classes and without for teaching, reading texts, student affairs, contacting alumni, and recruiting prospective students. But the movement—driven by the recognition that people were spending more time on mobile devices—went in fits and starts. Higher education, never a rapid adapter, struggled to figure out how best to make use of mobile devices and new capabilities.
