As a parent, my concern was: who will my kid be sitting next to. I left a very blue collar upbringing to raise my kids in a more advantaged area. I wanted them sitting next to kids who came from parents who valued hard work and education as I did. There have been pros and cons. But as they grow into adulthood and are able to realise the "bubble" they lived in, I find that they also picked up on the things I wanted: education is important and hard work gets you to your goals. I am not sure this would have been true had I raised them where I came from. Socieoeconomic diversity is needed so that kids who "do without" sit next to kids who model hard work and the value of education. How can this be done with respect?
