I’ve been seeing a lot of TV commercials for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) recently. It must be because the manufacturers like the demographics of the two main types of programs I watch: network news and sports.

Komen sees big drop in contributions after dispute

Komen sees big drop in contributions after dispute | Disease mongering | Scoop.it

"DALLAS (AP) - Susan G. Komen for the Cure saw a 22 percent drop in contributions in the year following the controversy over its decision, quickly reversed, to stop giving grants to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings.

Citing audited financial statements posted on its website this week, a spokeswoman for the Dallas-based breast cancer charity said contributions - including donations and corporate sponsorships - dropped from about $164 million from the fiscal year ending in March 2012 to $128 million in the year ending March 2013.

After news of the plan to quit offering grants to Planned Parenthood broke in January 2012, several executives left the organization and fewer people took part in its fundraising Races for the Cure across the country. The organization announced last summer that it would cancel half of its three-day charity walks for this year because of a drop in participation.

The statements also showed that revenue from Race for the Cure and three-day events had a 19 percent drop for the same fiscal period, falling from about $258 million to $208 million. Total revenue, which included the race fees, contributions, other fundraising and interest, dropped 18 percent in that time period, from $399 million to $325 million."

According to the article:

"The organization also this week disclosed 2013 salary information, saying that Brinker has taken a $158,700 pay cut with her move from CEO to global strategy chair. Brinker's annual salary for her new role is $390,000, down from $548,700 in 2012. Salerno, named president and CEO in June, has a salary of $475,000."

Acute effects of violent video-game playing on blood pressure and appetite perception in normal-weight young men: a randomized controlled trial

Acute effects of violent video-game playing on blood pressure and appetite perception in normal-weight young men: a randomized controlled trial | Disease mongering | Scoop.it
Violent video-game playing was associated with a significant increase in diastolic BP (Δ±s.d.=+7.5±5.8mmHg; P=0.04) compared with the other two groups. Subjects playing violent video games felt less full (P=0.02) and reported a tendency towards sweet food consumption. Video games involving violence appear to be associated with significant effects on BP and appetite perceptions compared with non-violent gaming or watching TV.

GSK is to stop paying doctors to talk about its drugs and attend conferences | BMJ | Disease mongering | Scoop.it

The UK based pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has said that by the start of 2016 it will stop paying doctors to speak on its behalf or to attend conferences, to end undue influence on prescribers.

In an announcement on 17 December GSK also said that it planned to remove individual sales targets from its sales force, meaning that drug representatives would no longer be paid according to the number of prescriptions they solicited from the doctors they saw.

Instead GSK is introducing a new performance related scheme that will reward sales representatives for their technical knowledge, the quality of the service they deliver to support improved care of patients, …

Evidence based medicine is broken | BMJ

Evidence based medicine is broken | BMJ | Disease mongering | Scoop.it
Evidence based medicine (EBM) wrong footed the drug industry for a while in the 1990s. We could fend off the army of pharmaceutical representatives because often their promotional material was devoid of evidence. But the drug industry came to realise that EBM was an opportunity rather than a threat. Research, especially when published in a prestigious journal, was worth more than thousands of sales representatives. Today EBM is a loaded gun at clinicians’ heads. “You better do as the evidence says,” it hisses, leaving no room for discretion or judgment. EBM is now the problem, fueling overdiagnosis and …
