New York has gone dark because of Hurricane Sandy, creating an eerie skyline. The city that’s known for its bright lights went dark Monday night, leaving the Manhattan skyline an eerie shadow. Electric company Con Edison experienced a major plant explosion, which shut off power in several areas, including Lower and Mid-Manhattan. The company also chose to shut others’ power, in order to prevent further damage from superstorm Sandy. The company is tweeting its plans to shut down more surrounding areas. Massive earthquakes in southeast Missouri. Magnitude 4.0 earthquake at 3:58 a.m. was located near the town of East Prairie, Mo., roughly midway between St. Louis and Memphis. Several people in five states — Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee — felt the quake, along with scattered people in four others, as far away as North Carolina and Georgia, according to responses to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

Authorities said at least 100 were injured when a tornado hit the city at 4:56 a.m. today. Between 250 to 300 houses were damaged or destroyed and about 25 businesses were badly hit, authorities said. Harrisburg Medical Center CEO Vince Ashley could not immediately estimate how many of the injured were treated at the 78-bed hospital, which sustained damage. But they’re not the only ones using social media to sound a digital alarm when disaster strikes. Officials in the U.S. do that too. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a scientific agency of the U.S. government, is tasked in part with researching natural disasters and getting the word out when they hit. They’re doing much of that information sharing online.
