For the fourth straight day in a row, vicious storms producing destructive tornadoes, very large hail and damaging winds are on the weather menu from the southern Plains to the Great Lakes. This is part of the same storm system that produced a deadly tornado in Moore, Okla., Monday and widespread severe storm reports since Saturday.

At least 10 people were killed in other states when a severe pre-dawn storm pounded southern Illinois and left the city’s medical center scrambling to treat an influx of injured, authorities said. Officials initially reported that as many as 10 people had died in the city of 9,000, but later revised the figure. Authorities said at least 100 were injured when a tornado hit the city at 4:56 a.m. today. Between 250 to 300 houses were damaged or destroyed and about 25 businesses were badly hit, authorities said. Harrisburg Medical Center CEO Vince Ashley could not immediately estimate how many of the injured were treated at the 78-bed hospital, which sustained damage. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a scientific agency of the U.S. government, is tasked in part with researching natural disasters and getting the word out when they hit. They’re doing much of that information sharing online. New York has gone dark because of Hurricane Sandy, creating an eerie skyline. The city that’s known for its bright lights went dark Monday night, leaving the Manhattan skyline an eerie shadow. Electric company Con Edison experienced a major plant explosion, which shut off power in several areas, including Lower and Mid-Manhattan. The company also chose to shut others’ power, in order to prevent further damage from superstorm Sandy. The company is tweeting its plans to shut down more surrounding areas. At least four people were killed overnight as a line of tornadoes marched across the Midwest, hitting places like the tourist hub of Branson. Massive earthquakes in southeast Missouri. Magnitude 4.0 earthquake at 3:58 a.m. was located near the town of East Prairie, Mo., roughly midway between St. Louis and Memphis.
