Big ideas. Byte sized chunks.
Kathy Koustoubardis's insight:

Access to course work is extremely important and although technology can be an enabler it is essential that people with disabilities are  provided with appropriate support and training by a specialist disability Teacher to use the technology. "Read and Write Gold" is user friendly as it has a floating toolbar and does not lead to unwarranted attention ;  however,  students require training and support to tailor it to their learning styles to be able to access it fully. Students with disabilities are not a homogenous group and it is important to bear in mind that different students have different needs. Research indicates that if students do not find technology beneficial or useful  they will not use it.

E-learning and Disability in Higher Education

E-learning and Disability in Higher Education | Teaching students with Intellectual and Learning disabilities in Vocational Education | Scoop.it
Most people working within the higher education sector understand the importance of making e-learning accessible to students with disabilities, yet it is not always clear exactly how this should be accomplished.  E-Learning and Disability in Higher Education evaluates current accessibility practice and critiques the extent to which 'best' practices can be confidently identified and disseminated. This second edition has been fully updated and includes a focus on research that seeks to give 'voice' to disabled students in a way that provides an indispensible insight into their relationship with technologies and the institutions in which they study. Examining the social, educational, and political background behind making online learning accessible in higher and further education, E-Learning and Disability in Higher Education considers the roles and perspectives of the key stake-holders involved in e-learning: lecturers, professors, instructional designers, learning technologists, student support services, staff developers, and senior managers and administrators.

Shranna's curator insight, January 24, 2014 2:00 AM

" Different students absorb information in different ways, so adopting a multifaceted teaching style benefits everyone" is said perfectly. I believe that a classroom is filled with children from different backgrounds, and beliefs that it is important to look at a topic/ subject in different angles. I also believe that being aware with the many learning disabilities that- as an instructor it is essential to be able to tackle a subject with variety. I think that there are many tools nowadays that assist children on being able to learn a particular topic where eventually they will learn is just great!

Breaking down barriers for apprentices

Click here to edit the title

Kathy Koustoubardis's insight:

To ensure true participation and access for apprentices and trainers with disabilities it is vital that all stakeholders such as apprentice/ student, Tafe, employer and employment service work collaboratively and in partnership. In my years of experience, I have found that trainees and apprentices end up achieving successful outcomes when there is a commitment and support for this. Providing subsidies is only a small part in achieving successful outcomes.

Easy Checks: a path to WCAG simplicity? | Access iQ

Dr Scott Hollier looks at Easy Checks and how to make WCAG 2.0 accessible to the non-tech savvy.
Kathy Koustoubardis's insight:

As according to Dr Hollier  WCAG 2.0 does needs to be technical in order for developers and designers to effectively implement it, it may still be too complex for someone with little technical background to understand. Such people could include those who work in policy, legal or disability support areas. In order to be effectively implemented within an organisation, WCAG  2.0 needs to be accessible itself – not just to tech savvy people but to everyone. For those of us who work in disabilities without the in depth technical understanding  of coding techniques , accessibility of a website can be checked by Entering Easy Checks - A First Review of Web Accessibility.
