I AGREE wholly with Nicholas Aw in his letter "How to get disability terminology right" (March 21). His letter is most timely as Singapore strives towards becoming a more inclusive society.
Generally, our choice of words matters very much within the disability community as language has always been a cornerstone in our attempt to attain respect and inclusivity in our society.
Using appropriate terminology, not only provides people with disabilities a sense of individual and collective identity but also reminds the rest of us without disabilities to be more socially sensitive and be acutely aware of the discrimination they experience daily and are denied the same rights and opportunities as the rest of us.
