Social Media Project Monitors Keywords to Prevent Suicide

Social Media Project Monitors Keywords to Prevent Suicide | Dirty Yoga | Scoop.it

A Boston-based project is using predictive analysis technology to comb through social media posts in hopes of preventing suicide.

The opt-in Durkheim Project combines search technology with predictive analysis to estimate the suicide risk of an individual based on what he or she is posting on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. Already in collaboration with Facebook, the Durkheim Project is currently gathering social media data from participating active duty military members and veterans.

This could be really helpful in preventing future incidents of suicide due to cyberbullying or other causes. If the project has success among the US army veterans, we could see it being implimented worldwide.

Deandra Covington's curator insight, June 28, 9:09 PM

This is probably the neatest way to utilize social media to benefit our troops. The Durkhein Project is testing for mental illnesses by analyzing social media communication. Many people with mental illness want to be heard, but that doesn't mean they will just come out and say it or try to get the help they need. By finding key words or phrases, we may be able to eventually find who has PTSD or who is contemplating suicide.

While they have built a complete science around this, my only concern is that they might pinpoint the wrong people every once in a while. If they do, and their command is notified, could it affect their career? I suppose this is dependent on how they decide to deal with alerts if this is implemented. I think it is important to maintain that clinical intervention would be necessary first and only allow the member's command in if it is verified that the person is suicidal.

With that said, I give tremendous kudos to this project. People that have a mental illness usually try to let people know they need help in some way or another. The Durkhein Project can help us better able to pinpoint these signs.

Jess Gronholm's insight:

After spending time with my family this past week, which includes 5 boys and 2 girls under the age of 10 - I realized just how addicting video games have become. They each had their own iPad or iPhone to play games on - which meant they were all playing seperately rather than together. It made the whole family experience feel a bit disjointed...

How interactive technology is transforming storytelling

How interactive technology is transforming storytelling | Dirty Yoga | Scoop.it

Three things really fascinate me about the new digital writing toolkit: the possibility of increased immersion in a story, the ability to represent choice, and the way the audience can influence the story. I'll take them one by one.

This is a great article about the future of storytelling. I love this point. "Art and science (or technology) are often imagined to be totally separate – but this is not, and never has been, true."

Nice post

Chad Clark's curator insight, July 23, 2013 2:41 PM

A “good tale well told” transcends the medium by which it is relayed.  Credit is due Naomi Alderman for saying as much, or rather writing as much in this brief but value-packed article.  (At one point she confesses to being an instructor of creative writing as well as digital media; her article resonates with familiarity of those two areas of expertise.)  For additional reading re: Immersion, I recommend Frank Rose’s The Art of Immersion.   As to “representing choice” – am I the only avid reader who as a kid tried to get into the Choose Your Own Adventure books but ultimately preferred my bound page to be more of “Calvinoesque”?  (And for the record, I still hate seeing the following words in a periodical: to continue reading, turn to page…)

But with digital media the other shoe has fallen.

In conclusion Alderman speaks to audience participation. I can’t help but think of The Rocky Horror Picture Show whenever I see those two words – audience and participation – together, but alas, I wish I could think Star Wars, Episode One.  You see just last night I watched a 12 minute video simply titled “What If Star Wars: Episode I" Was Good?” This video is one man’s take on how to make EpiOne better, er, um, good even.  Now I’m a huge Star Wars fan, having seen Episode IV: A New Hope when I was only 5.  I’m also a digital media guy myself – so says the University of Washington and after George Lucas destroyed my childhood with Episodes I, II, and III, one other digital media guy takes 12 minutes and tells a story that, well, that if made into a movie wouldn’t have bit the big dead Chihuahua. (Come on, EpiOne was really bad.)

But with the world of Star Wars fans (nerds?) out there, don’t you think George, er, Mr. Lucas, could have made a better film if he’d have listened?  I think so – and so even with all the beautiful digital effects, it all comes down to a good tale well told and in this case, that needed audience participation.
