Stanley and Stephen and Stommel and Me–Midway at DigiWriMo | Doing DH at the CC

One thing that I’ve discovered with DigiWritMo is that I do a lot of virtual writing—that is to say, reading and thinking—in my research into DH at the CC. My daily discipline in this past year has been to go to my DH list and see what scholars are tweeting about, to find something substantial and read it and then to tweet about it. So in a given day I might read 5000 words and tweet 140 characters. That discipline has suited me just fine in this past year, as the 140 word count is a surprisingly good mnemonic tool. Coming up with some kind of a tweet about something I’ve read, even if it’s an MT of someone’s original tweet, provides a focus for reading, and I think I have developed a broad understanding of some of the major DH work being done currently and some of the debates in the field. I ’ve observed important continuities with the theoretical frameworks that I studied intensely in grad school (cultural studies, feminism, etc.), and also seen genuinely new turns.

Not Quite Nate Silver: Predicting My Monthly Writing | Writing | Chris Friend

Not Quite Nate Silver: Predicting My Monthly Writing | Writing | Chris Friend | #digiwrimo: Digital Writing Month | Scoop.it

I’m participating in Digital Writing Month, which sets a goal for its participants to write 50,000 words in November 2012. I joined for a number of reasons, mostly to force myself to write regularly and at greater length. I have comp exams coming up, and I’ve fallen off the proverbial wagon of regular academic writing. Asking myself to write 50,000 words in a month sounded like a good way to get back on that wagon.

Creative Writing: We Don’t Want No 21st Century Global Blah Blah Blah | Sad Iron

Creative Writing: We Don’t Want No 21st Century Global Blah Blah Blah | Sad Iron | #digiwrimo: Digital Writing Month | Scoop.it

The stereotype goes like this: humanities professors are nostalgic grumps wedded to pencil, paper, and old-fashioned books, while today’s students do everything fast and digital, including brushing their teeth. Could something close to the reverse be true? I’m finding that to be the case in my current creative writing poetry class.

Writing Digitally & Digital Literacy

Today I was able to attend an online panel presentation- Creating a Culture of Learning: How Librarians Keep up with Digital Media & Technology- that was sponsored by ALA’s Office of Information Technology Policy Digital Literacy Task Force. Panelists discussed how they keep up with technology to help library patrons, work within their library communities, and as a quest for lifelong learning. Following not only the comments on the YouTube streaming page, I paid attention to (and participated in) the live twitter discussion. In the span of the hour I heard about numerous apps that will definitely shape digital writing in the future.

Peer-Driven Learning: When Zombies Overran Twitter | Inside Higher Ed

Peer-Driven Learning: When Zombies Overran Twitter | Inside Higher Ed | #digiwrimo: Digital Writing Month | Scoop.it

If you’ve been following me on Twitter over the weekend, you may have noticed something happened to my avatar and the nature of my tweets. I was (and still am until 1PM Monday) a zombie. I’ve been playing a Twitter vs Zombie (#TvsZ), which is the brainchild of the same people who brought you Hybrid Pedagogy and MOOC MOOC (you can check out their live-streaming presentation on play and pedagogy at Duke University Monday at 1:30 PM). I have to say, this is exactly what I needed.

DeComposing in the Twitter vs. Zombie Game

DeComposing in the Twitter vs. Zombie Game | #digiwrimo: Digital Writing Month | Scoop.it

I can’t say I am a big fan of zombies (well, who is, really?) and I have often wondered about the ways zombies have taken anchor in popular culture. But friends in the Digital Writing Month adventure launched a Twitter-based game called Twitter Vs. Zombies is more complex than I can go into here (although you can find all the emerging rules here). It’s essentially a massive game of Twitter Hashtag Tag, and I have to say, it drew me in this weekend.

Twitter vs Zombies — the game

Twitter vs Zombies — the game | #digiwrimo: Digital Writing Month | Scoop.it

There is an epic battle of humanity taking place on Twitter. The Zombie apocalypse has arrived. Essentially, the Twitter vs Zombies game (#TvsZ) is a giant game of tag. It’s been pretty organic and the rules have emerged and changed a bit since it started. They’re mostly collaborative with very little administrator intervention. It’s pretty fun and neat to see.

Digital Prewriting

Digital Prewriting | #digiwrimo: Digital Writing Month | Scoop.it

As part of DigiWriMo, most of my stuff has been school related. I’m using the month to help develop some discipline and encourage me to write something somewhat academic/serious every day. I need to get into better writing habits. In fact, I started this blog back in August with that goal in mind too. So far I’ve been pleased with the results. I’ve posted about once a week, really branched out, and done some good networking.
