Narrative Strategies for Learning | Usable Learning

Narrative Strategies for Learning | Usable Learning | Digitized media | Scoop.it

by Julie Dirksen

"So this session is about pulling some of the specific strategies that fiction writers use to into learning scenarios.  There are a lot of other interesting ways to explore storytelling in terms of meta-structures, psychology and cultural constructs.  This isn’t that presentation (though I’ll probably do that one too, one of these days).

"This presentation is focused on specific strategies for making learning stories more interesting."

Lots of people talk about how important it is to tell a story when trying to inform, entertain, persuade, or teach someone something; but they usually don't tell you how to do that. Or, if they try to tell you, they don't do it very well.

Dirksen is not one of those people. She explains very well and this slide deck is a terrific distillation of a great deal of wise information. This is really good!

Content Marketing has grown up fast and Martin (Marty) Smith gives some great advice in this post. One of these is what he calls COPE for Create Once Publish Everywhere which I think is a great #leancontent rule:

1. Because everytime you can remix your own content, you should: this is not being boring, this is acknowledging that the world is vast and that people are busy so they might not be reading your tweet just because you shared something.

2. Content curation or creation only works if it's coupled with strong distribution.

3. SEO and social shares are tightly correlated.

Robin Good's curator insight, September 18, 2013 12:02 PM

Conceived and created by andré felipe back in 2008, Typo/Graphic Posters is a curated collection of "inspiring" quality posters with a strong focus on typography and expressive graphical compositions.

The works represented come from artists and graphic designers from all over the world and which "challenge type, colors and shapes to express a message".

For each selected author you can see an horizontally laid out collection of his visual posters, which can be clicked and enlarged, and commented via a Facebook plugin appearing at the end of the set.

Comments. A great curated visual collection, where you can truly find inspiration at every step. Every single set included in it, has been rigorously vetted before being accepted. This is not something you can check, but if you look contained in this collection, you can tell right away that the quality you see is not fruit of an accident.

This type of content is so good and valuable, it stays evergreen even if it's not updated.

When curating content, even if it is not of a visual nature, a curator should strive to achieve the same level of quality and long-lasting value of such collections.

Free to access.

How would you shape your story?

Andrew Raimist's curator insight, February 28, 10:06 PM

Kurt Vonnegut's rejected anthropology thesis proposed that the shapes of a culture's stories was at least as important as the shapes of their pots and spearheads.

I've been interested about the potential relationship of literary form to visual form, how we understand them logically, intellectually and emotively. How could a drawing, painting or work of architecture express the ideas contained in a work of literature through the use of form?

You can see Vonnegut discuss his ideas on the shapes of stories in this clip on YouTube:

Crystal Renfro, a subject and Faculty Engagement Librarian at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, introduces the relevance of content curation to academic librarians beyond the notions generally prescribed by Digital and Data Curation specialists.

She highlights content curation importance and reason d'etre by explaining the goal it is trying to achieve (helping us finding what is truly relevant) and providing references both to Beth Kanter and to my own work, to help academics better appreciate the benefits of embracing content curation.

A good introduction to a new way of looking at curation for digital archive specialists and academic information librarians.

My students seemed to like it so I asked them to create their own prezi presentations to introduce us their families or to make up a crazy story in the past. They loved it!! Funnier that powerpoint, really interactive, they uploaded tons of pics, changed backgrounds and effects and one of them even created a tree with pictures hanging from the branches. 100% success!!
