Robots in Finland: How a Small Open Hardware Project Sparked International Collaboration Across 10 Timezones and 5,000 Miles : OSCON 2014 - O'Reilly Conferences, July 20 - 24, 2014, Portland, OR | Digitization&Metadata | Scoop.it
This talk shares the success story of how a small open hardware project used an Arduino/Python archival digitization robot to spark an international collaboration spanning cultures and continents. The talk focuses on how the collaboration came to be, how the teams used tools like 3D printing and video to work together across 5000+ miles, and how other OS projects can create similar partnerships.
Bibliodata's insight:

Project Gado launched in 2010 with the goal of creating an open source archival scanning robot that small archives could use to digitize their photographic collections. In 2012, the project released the Gado 2, a $500 Arduino and Python-based robot which could scan historical photos at archival resolution, fully autonomously.

Digitisation Map

Digitisation Map | Digitization&Metadata | Scoop.it
Bibliodata's insight:

We invite you to add your initiative to the Map of the European digitisation landscape a project that has been developed by Succeed, which aims to identify active projects, centres of competence, networks and any other initiatives to help pinpoint stakeholders, future needs and options for the exploitation of digitised content.

The map will provide support for helping every heritage institution to find the networks or centres of competence that best match its particular needs, and for forecasting research and implementation challenges and proposing what measures must be taken to address the requirements of digitisation programmes.

Right now you can find 290 initiatives including networks, projects, private companies and institutions active in digitisation and related fields on the Map of the European digitisation landscape .

Using API Specifications | Citrix Blogs

Using API Specifications | Citrix Blogs | Digitization&Metadata | Scoop.it
With the explosion of the API economy, there has been a push to create a set of standards that will help define the capabilities of an API, as well as what information should be returned from a specific call.
Bibliodata's insight:

OData is a specification published by Microsoft.  It uses query parameters such as $metadata, $select and $expand.  These query parameters are one of the most powerful aspects of OData implementation. They allow you to increase or decrease the amount of information given in a single call which makes parsing the result data much easier.

Welcome // | Bamboo DiRT

Bibliodata's insight:

The DiRT directory <http://dirt.projectbamboo.org/>, a longstanding,
well-regarded source of information
about tools available to support scholarship in the humanities, is
soliciting applications for an editorial board, to ensure the coverage and
accuracy of the directory's tool listings. DiRT editors will be expected to:

- Add, edit, and review new tool listings
- Periodically review existing tool listings, and update them as needed
- Contribute to discussions about changes to DiRT's structure and features

DiRT editors will be appointed to a voluntary two-year term, subject to
renewal. The editorial board will meet virtually a minimum of twice a year,
and will correspond as needed by email. The anticipated workload is 2-3
hours/month, and participants will be officially recognized on the DiRT
site as ‘DiRT Editors’.

To apply, please send a statement of interest, including the type(s) of
tool listings you're most interested in curating (e.g. geospatial, text
mining, etc.), to quinnd@berkeley.edu by *May 23*. Librarians and academic
support staff are encouraged to apply; applicants from outside the United
States and western Europe are particularly welcome.

Applicants will be notified by 5/30.

Rome in three days, an archivists introduction to linked data publishing » LiAM: Linked Archival Metadata

Rome in three days, an archivists introduction to linked data publishing » LiAM: Linked Archival Metadata | Digitization&Metadata | Scoop.it
Bibliodata's insight:

Linked data in archival practice is not new. Others have been here previously. You can benefit from their experience and begin publishing linked data right now using tools with which you are probably already familiar. For example, you probably have EAD files, sets of MARC records, or metadata saved in database applications. Using existing tools, you can transform this content into RDF and put the result on the Web, thus publishing your information as linked data.
