Dr Akhilesh Gupta obtained his MSc degree in Physics from Lucknow University and PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from IIT, Delhi. He joined India Meteorological Department in 1985 and worked there as Meteorologist until 1994. He then joined National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting where he worked in the field of location specific weather forecasting and numerical weather modelling and coordinated All India Agro-advisory Service until 2006. Dr Gupta worked in the Disaster Management Cell of the Department of Science & Technology during 2006- 07. He worked as Advisor to the Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences during 2007-09
The Union Cabinet has approved setting up a National University for Women at Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh under the name – “The Indira Gandhi National University for Women”. This will be the first university of the country to be established exclusively for women.
A bill, namely, the Indira Gandhi National University for Women Bill, 2013 will be introduced in the coming monsoon session of Parliament. After the passage of the Bill, steps will be taken to set up the University.

Aakash is a series of Android-based tablet computers produced by an initiative of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. It is a low-cost tablet computer with a 7-inch touch screen. The device was developed as part of the country’s aim to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities in an e-learning program. The cost of basic version for a student was only Rs 1500, which was around USD35. In July 2010, the Minister of Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal unveiled a prototype of Aakash, which was later given out to 500 college students to collect feedback. The tablet was officially launched as Aakash in New Delhi on 5 October 2011. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India announced an upgraded second-generation model called Aakash 2 in April 2012. In this series, the new version of Aakash has been named Aakash IV.
