DECAY Official Trailer

If you ever thought CERN would be a fun place to work you’d only be half right: The scientists who work there might be awesome, but the nuclear research center makes the perfect setting for a zombie apocalypse.

Forthcoming feature film Decay is set entirely at the Large Hadron Collider, with the massive lab serving as backdrop for a dire scenario in which zombies have been created by exposure to the recently discovered Higgs boson (so much for that whole “God Particle” thing). The concept evolved in 2010 after writer/director Luke Thompson, a Ph.D. physics student at the University of Manchester, was exploring the maintenance tunnels of the European Organization for Nuclear Research along with fellow student Hugo Day.

“The dark, creepy atmosphere got us thinking it would be a great location for a horror film,” Thompson said in an e-mail to Wired.

As with George A. Romero’s 1968 zombie classic Night of the Living Dead, which was filmed mostly in rural Pennsylvania and used inexpensive props to keep production costs low, Decay’s ghoulish tale came to life thanks to the DIY spirit of indie filmmakers determined to make a movie on the cheap

Pastebin overcomes Anonymous spat

Pastebin overcomes Anonymous spat | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

Pastebin reveals demand for its service is surging despite an earlier clash with members of the Anonymous hacktivist collective.

Pastebin - a site where users can post text-based files for others to see - appears to have put a backlash from users behind it.

It had proved popular with Anonymous hacktivists, but many turned against it when its owner said he was considering removing "sensitive information".

The hackers even created a rival service.

Despite this, Pastebin said it had managed to achieve a new "milestone" of 25 million active "pastes".

"All those pastes together contain more than 1250 gigabytes of raw data," owner Jeroen Vader told the BBC.

"The last two years have been extremely hard work, but it seems to be paying off.

"On 27 October 2011 we reached the 10 million active pastes milestone; less than a year later on 4 July 2012 that doubled to 20 million, and now just over three months later we are celebrating 25 million pastes."

Why Teens and Adults Send X-Rated Texts

Why Teens and Adults Send X-Rated Texts | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

n some social circles, sending a nude photo via text message — sexting — leads to public shame, embarrassment and a ruined reputation for the sender. There have been countless stories of what happens when a naked or suggestive message falls into the wrong hands — just ask former congressman Anthony Weiner . But rarely do we discuss why people send these messages in the first place.

In some cases, according to Danah Boyd, a senior researcher at Microsoft Research, peer group pressure creates an environment where sexting is just another part of the conversation.

Young people are warned they may lose control over their images and videos once they are uploaded online

Young people are warned they may lose control over their images and videos once they are uploaded online | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

This follows a study by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). It shows 88% of the self-generated, sexually explicit online images and videos of young people their analysts encountered had been taken from their original location and uploaded onto other websites.

The findings from this study will inform the work of the UK Safer Internet Centre – a partnership between the IWF, Childnet and the South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL) aiming to empower and support children and young people to use the Internet safely.
Childnet and the SWGfL have developed two resources to help raise awareness of the potential consequences of sharing sexually explicit images and videos and to provide advice and guidance on how to support children and young people who have shared such images.

The study, which was carried out using data collected throughout September 2012 by IWF Internet Content Analysts, aimed to establish a snapshot of how many self-generated, sexually explicit images and videos of young people there are online.

Girls on Film: How Innocent Pictures Feed the Internet Porn Machine

Girls on Film: How Innocent Pictures Feed the Internet Porn Machine | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

When I was in high school, someone took a photo of me in our school’s production of a Tom Stoppard play. For some reason my character was on her hands and knees in a ballroom-dancing outfit. One of my friends asked me if he could borrow the photo, to prove to another girl, he said, that I was in the school play. I never saw it again. I thought little of it. To me it was a funny photo of me in a pink dress. To the testosterone-charged boys among whom it circulated, it was a photo of cleavage. How do I know this? Years later my husband told me. He saw the photo.

I was lucky. There was just one photo as color copies were too expensive for school-age boys. The damage was pretty much limited to one zipcode. And I was dressed. But today, capturing and preserving a girl’s image is an extremely, globally high-risk proposition. One false step and you’re fed to the Internet trolls.

The British Internet Watch Foundation, which works with local police to investigate complaints of online child sexual abuse, recently combed through its database of sites specifically for images that looked like they were self-portraits or self-made videos. In a mere 47 hours they found more than 12,000 instances of girls who had taken provocative portraits or videos of themselves; when they examined the provenance of these photos, they found 88% of them had been lifted from other websites, including social media. That is, almost nine times out of ten, the self-portraits on the porny or otherwise offensive websites were used without the permission or knowledge of the people in them.

Ok, so this app made me feel really dirty when I downloaded it. It’s called Badabing! and it basically goes through your friends’ photos on Facebook to pull out the ones of them at the pool or beach. In other words, we’re talking about scantily clad photos here.

I of course, for the sake of technology journalism, had to download the app and give it a whirl. It actually kind of works and it’s really creepy. To protect the not so innocent, I’m not going to post any actual screenshots of my Facebook friends. They’d kill me. And probably the folks who made this app.

Facebook, Email More Irresistible Than Sex

Facebook, Email More Irresistible Than Sex | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

You may want to ask your date to turn off his or her phone. A new study suggests Facebook and email trump sex in terms of sheer irresistibility.

The German study used smartphone-based surveys to probe the daily desires of 205 men and women, most of whom were college age. For one week the phones, provided by the researchers, buzzed seven times daily, alerting study subjects to take a quick survey on the type, strength and timing of their desires, as well as their ability to resist them.

While the desire for sex was stronger, the study subjects were more likely to cave into the desire to use media, including email and social networking platforms like Facebook and Twitter, according to the study.

With Pinbooster, Brands Can Now Legitimately Pay for a Repin on Pinterest - SocialTimes | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

One day after ComScore named Pinterest one of the top 50 websites in the U.S., Pinboosterhas opened to the public its pay-to-pin platform for influential consumers and brands. Basically, brands are paying people to repin their ads.Pinbooster’s service is the next wave in a series of tools for buying followers, pins, likes, and comments. This time, the pins are all marked with the hashtag #ad so that everyone knows what’s really going on.

Clearly, a referral from Pinterest is valuable. In May 2012, analysts for the e-commerce platform Shopify discovered that Pinterest users spent more money on their clients’ sites — an average of $80 per purchase –than customers who were referred to a retailer through Facebook or Twitter.

With Pinbooster, Brands choose from a list of people based on topic, audience size, influence level, budget, and location, and make the person an offer. Some users will make more money depending on how well they meet the criteria.

| digitalcuration | Scoop.it

Fracking Companies Using ‘Psychological Warfare’ Tactics To Silence Critics?

Fracking Companies Using ‘Psychological Warfare’ Tactics To Silence Critics? | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

Roughly a year ago today in Houston, the shale gas industry was caught red-handed discussing its use of military tactics and personnel on U.S. soil to intimidate and divide communities in order to continue its fracking bonanza.

In a gathering thought to be exclusively among friends, one industry public relations professional representing Range Resources, Matt Pitzarella, said his company utilizes psychological warfare (PSYOPs) tactics on citizens living in the Marcellus Shale basin. The Marcellus is one of the epicenters of the global hydraulic fracturing boom (“fracking”).

Matt Carmichael, External Affairs Manager at Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, told attendees, “we are dealing with an insurgency,” referring to citizens concerned about the impacts of oil and gas development in their communities. He advised the PR pros in the room to use the U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Manual, along with Donald Rumsfeld’s book, as guidebooks for suppressing dissent.

A year later, we’re learning that the oil industry is taking its aggressive military-style approach global. According to a press release published by Food and Water Europe, the industry is spying on fracking critics in Poland.

Sandy---The Social-Media Phenomenon

Sandy---The Social-Media Phenomenon | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

As the power flickered off in millions of homes around New York and New Jersey, many people were forced to give up on television and radio and rely exclusively on social media.

When Naomi Ben-Shahar woke up Tuesday morning in her Manhattan apartment, as Superstorm Sandy receded, she posted an urgent request on Facebook. "My phone battery is out and I'd love to charge it. Anybody around...with electricity that I could use?" Ms. Ben-Shahar, a 46-year-old artist and curator, had been without power since the night before and had been using her iPhone and iPad to post updates on Facebook and track news on Twitter. "I feel so disconnected," she said by message on Facebook. "I'm trying to read only reliable tweets."

As the power flickered off in millions of homes around New York and New Jersey, many like Ms. Ben-Shahar had been forced to give up on television and radio and rely almost exclusively on social media, where the storm played out on the tiny screens of mobile devices in a hugely fast-paced alternative narrative of destruction.

Do some rearranging to put the stuff you want front-and-centre — whether that’s particular people or information — and reassess anything that’s gone stale.
