People are tied to the social network, but they have conflicted feelings about its benefits
Six in 10 people who use digital tools heavily say that Facebook will never fade into oblivion, and that they can't imagine ever abandoning the social network, according to a report from NBC Universal's Integrated Media. Less digitally active users are less bullish, with 43% saying they think Facebook will endure indefinitely

E-reputation: how one's online life can interfere with one's offline life

E-reputation: how one's online life can interfere with one's offline life | digitalcuration | Scoop.it
GBNews attended a conference on e-reputation, or how one’s “online life” can interfere and cause damage to his or her “offline life”.

For some years now, we have witnessed important digital and societal transformations. The separation between private and public has become a blurred line. As Stéphane Koch underlines, a social network is a human creation. Unlike many, Koch sees the internet as part of real life and not something purely virtual.

For him, the internet is just a tool used to connect people. But like all tools, we need to know how to properly use it, so that we do not get hurt. At the same time, because of the technological progress and the era of globalization we live in, more and more people seem to be losing control over their personal data. According to Koch, we are facing a true dematerialization of data. “Bye Bye files and archives department, Hello Clouds!” we could say. These changes can have an important impact on our lives, both on and offline

Publishers are switching affections from Snapchat to Instagram - Digiday

Publishers are switching affections from Snapchat to Instagram - Digiday | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

“Our Discover following is enormous, but our Snapchat handle following is not as big as Instagram. I don’t know the number of followers of [the accounts].” Nothing is forever in the world of platforms.

Two years ago, publishers that didn’t have a coveted slot in the Snapchat Discover section were scrambling to use individual accounts on Snapchat to connect with millennials in a raw, personal way, sometimes posting as often as several times a day there.

Today, parent company Snap is facing questions about user growth and retention, with all the moves Facebook’s Instagram is making to copy Snapchat’s features, as its declining stock price shows. Instagram’s moves are paying off with publishers, many of whom have shifted their enthusiasm to Instagram.Facebook’s Instagram is copying Snapchat’s features left and right, and the moves are paying off with publishers.

This is what can happen if you use the same passwords over and over | digitalcuration | Scoop.it
Kristy Jasper, 28, had almost £4,000 stolen from her business account by fraudsters 18 months ago and police told her the likely cause was her use of identical passwords for numerous online accounts. These included PayPal, Amazon, LinkedIn, Facebook and a website used to buy office supplies. Upon checking her accounts she noticed nine online payments totalling £3,800 had been made to high street retailers such as Argos and Currys.

| digitalcuration | Scoop.it

Ransomware attack puts KQED in low-tech mode

Ransomware attack puts KQED in low-tech mode | digitalcuration | Scoop.it

The journalists at San Francisco’s public TV and radio station, KQED, have been stuck in a time warp.

All Internet-connected devices, tools and machinery have been cut off in an attempt to isolate and contain a ransomware attack that infected the station’s computers June 15.

Though the stations’ broadcasts have been largely uninterrupted — minus a half-day loss of the online stream on the first day of the attack — KQED journalists said every day has brought new challenges and revealed the immeasurable ways the station, like many businesses today, has become dependent on Internet-connected devices.

If KQED, an organization that had up-to-date security systems and an awareness cultivated by routinely producing news stories about cyberattacks, can fall victim to such an attack, most other companies can, too.

Facebook users pwnd by phone with account recovery vulnerability

Facebook users pwnd by phone with account recovery vulnerability | digitalcuration | Scoop.it
Facebook account recovery using pre-registered mobile numbers is poorly implemented and open to abuse, according to critic James Martindale. Martindale wrote an article on Medium, titled I kinda hacked a few Facebook accounts using a vulnerability they won't fix, highlighting his concerns in a bid to push the social network into tightening up its system. Old phone numbers no longer owned by a user but are still tied to their account can be assigned by a carrier to another person. If the number is still linked to a Facebook account, the new owner can subsequently log into the account without the password and either change it or leave it be (so someone doesn't know a breach has occurred). The loophole cannot target specific accounts but might be used to hijack an account before, for example, running scams against the account holder's friends and contacts

Hidden Features and Third Party Programs That Make Spotify Work for You

Hidden Features and Third Party Programs That Make Spotify Work for You | digitalcuration | Scoop.it
Free yourself from Spotify's suggested songs tool and write your own playlist programs Without a doubt, playlists are the heart and soul of Spotify. If properly curated, they can provide the right musical backdrop to any situation in your life. But doing so requires time and effort to manually create the playlist or browse through Spotify's suggested songs. But it doesn't have to be this way—if you take a systematic approach to the issue and make use of a few smart tools, you can master playlists in mere minutes. With Smarter Playlists, the external browser-based Spotify extension, you can create your own customizable playlists. It's really easy: Choose sources for your songs—for example, an Artist Radio, an album, or a pre-existing playlist. From there, use a filter to decide which songs shouldn't be included, whether that's because they're too fast, not danceable enough, or too short. You can also decide how many songs from each source you want to include in your playlist.

G20 calls for 'lawful and non-arbitrary access to available information' to fight terror • The Register | digitalcuration | Scoop.it
The Register comment: Turnbull and the G20's “not a backdoor” was refined, however: what the government wants this week is backdoors created and managed by messaging platforms. “The G20 communique is not talking about giving governments a backdoor to access messaging” (emphasis added). “Rather it is saying to Silicon Valley and its emulators – the ball is in your court. You have created messaging applications which are encrypted end to end, they are being used by terrorists and criminals to hide their murderous plans. “You must ensure that these dark places can be illuminated by the law so that the freedoms you hold dear will not be stripped away by criminals your technologies have made undetectable.” For all that both the communique and Turnbull's speech talked about “collaboration” with industry, there's no mechanism for such collaboration or explanation of what Google, Facebook and Twitter are already attempting – to identify terrorist recruitment and hate speech, and delete those posts quickly. As far as encryption goes, it's hard to see the platforms cutting their own throats by inserting backdoors in their products
