The Debate on Rich Snippets and Their Future in the SERPS

Google has been aggressively promoting schema.org, rich snippets and declaring an author for your site. Although these three concepts seem very different, they are actually very similar and they reflect what I think is a general shift in direction for how search engines may interact with websites in the future. Specifically, this is indicative of the shift to a more ‘semantic web’ - web sites will define certain common types of content for search engines. According to Richard MacManus in Google’s Semantic Web Push: Rich Snippets Usage Growing,

The Urgency of the Cloud for Enterprise : Beyond Search

It seems that moving IT infrastructure to the cloud is no longer an innovative alternative, but is rather becoming the standard, the norm. IT teams need to embrace the change and shift their thinking away from the football team sized IT staffs of the future. This is not just a general trend, but one that specifically applies to large organizations’ enterprise solutions as well. Rob Lamear focuses on the need to move SharePoint to the cloud in, “Why You NEED SharePoint in the Cloud Now.”

Co-Creation & Collective Intelligence: Why combining co-creation and collective intelligence?

Co-Creation & Collective Intelligence: Why combining co-creation and collective intelligence? | digitalassetman | Scoop.it

" Co-creating and collective intelligence/wisdom are forming a hybrid forces, a calling to reclaim the participation of people in groups as positive, useful, healing, life affirming. We alter the way that we see the world in order to solve problems together.
It is a fact that humans today love to participate in problem-solving online, to have a voice and to express themselves, to be a part of the story-telling of new media, and to be a part of the collective intelligence process. The cultural, economic and political changes brought on by online intelligence sharing, via different media, have been truly amazing and reflect extraordinary cultural shifts in the 21st century. There is a huge opportunity out of there, people feel right to collaborate to solve higher issues, higher order of problems or matters."

More on why I'm excited about 2012

So I’m excited about what’s happening with intellectual property. You must think I’m mad, what with SOPA and ACTA and Hadopi and DMCA and Digital Economy Act and who knows what else. How could I possibly think that things are getting better when they palpably aren’t? What am I smoking?

For the answer to that, I have to turn to a second friend and mentor, Clay Shirky, as quoted famously by a third, Kevin Kelly.

Institutions will try to preserve the problem to which they are the solution.

Digital Formats, part 1: Lots of ‘Em and More to Come « The Signal: Digital Preservation | digitalassetman | Scoop.it

The following is a guest post by Carl Fleischhauer, a Digital Initiatives Project Manager in NDIIPP.

The Library has presented information about digital formats since 2004, intended to support preservation planning in our institution and in our sister archives.

This is, of course, an open-ended activity: new formats come along with some regularity and, in any case, it is often the old ones (obsolete or heading in that direction) that are of special preservation concern

Predicting the Future of Computing

Predicting the Future of Computing | digitalassetman | Scoop.it
Since no supercomputer can yet predict the future, we need your help. Readers are invited to make predictions and collaboratively edit this timeline, which is divided into three sections: a sampling of past advances, future predictions that you can push forward or backward in time (but not, of course, into the past), and a form for making and voting on predictions. The most prescient prophet might receive an iPad 2 in 2050. But if the past is any guide, this prediction will almost surely be wrong

Patterns of connections reveal brain functions - MIT News Office

Patterns of connections reveal brain functions - MIT News Office | digitalassetman | Scoop.it
Neuroscientists identify face-recognition areas based on what parts of the brain they link to.

For more than a decade, neuroscientists have known that many of the cells in a brain region called the fusiform gyrus specialize in recognizing faces. However, those cells don’t act alone: They need to communicate with several other parts of the brain. By tracing those connections, MIT neuroscientists have now shown that they can accurately predict which parts of the fusiform gyrus are face-selective.

Data is becoming a new type of raw material, on a par with capital and labour, according to a 2011 World Economic Forum report, Personal Data: The Emergence of a New Asset Class. Some of the largest Internet companies, including Google and Facebook reap most of the profits from collecting, aggregating, analyzing and monetizing personal data. Consumers have no control and little knowledge of what is being done with their data.

Great Content Curation Models: E-learning Examples by David Anderson

Great Content Curation Models: E-learning Examples by David Anderson | digitalassetman | Scoop.it

If you are looking for inspiration when it comes to content curation, here is a great example at work.

ElearningExamples is a curated collection of "examples" from the real world of online communications in the areas of "multimedia journalism", "infographics" and "html5" among others.

For each one of these categories the author has written and edited a specific information card containing relevant information, images and links to the work being referenced.

The design of the site and the quality of the work "examples" being showcased make this a good example of what good "content curation" is.

Clearly, the work produced by this site, produces no noise or regurgitation of information, but rather offers a better way to make sense and discover the communication areas being curated on the site.

Thanks to David Anderson, an e-learning designer & community manager at Articulate for having created this excellent curated set of galleries.

Inspiring. 9/10
