Twitter was never designed to be a social network but it has become one.


In fact it was designed initially in 2006 to used by individuals as an SMS type service to communicate with a small group at the podcasting company Odeo.

 

When I first joined Twitter in 2008, I was underwhelmed and wondered as to its usefulness. Its early attraction to me was its novelty factor.

 

It has overcome this challenge and four years later it has built an impressive resume.

Over 140 million active users as of 2012 Generates over 340 million tweets daily Handles over 1.6 billion search queries per day Tenth most visited site on the internet

 

In the nearly six years since its founding over 600 million users have registered Twitter accounts.

Generally people don’t like change!


The majority of us like routine and familiarity. Mess with someone’s habitual routine and watch them start to sweat, stress and squirm.

 

They also say that a change is as good as a holiday but is all change good?

 

Facebook’s new timeline is now live on both the personal profiles and pages and it has taken the known and familiar and replaced it with a very new design.

 

Steve Jobs said in an interview with Wired magazine in 1997 “People think that design is how it looks, but it goes much deeper than that, it is actually how it works”

 

So does the new Facebook timeline design “work”?

 

The impact for business is that it needs to evaluate the implications of these changes to ensure that they maintain their engagement and utilise the stronger visual format that the brand “pages” now have.

 

So the changes are in place and the dust has settled, what are the implications for the managers, administrators and users of the “new”Facebook timeline “page”.

Search Engine, Browser and Device Stats

 

One tool I come back to again and again is StatsCounter – there's data on the market shares of search engines, browser versions, computer, and mobile hardware and operating systems here for most countries. Whilst it's always sensible to compare two sources of this data, this is always where I start.
