There’s no innovation agenda without design thinking - Globe and Mail

There’s no innovation agenda without design thinking - Globe and Mail | Digitala verktyg för lärandet. En skola i förändring. | Scoop.it
Never have design thinking, design practice and creative skills been as important to Canada’s future as they are now. Today, competitive success is determined by the ability to understand human needs and desires and to deliver richly imagined ways of addressing them. Many organizations recognize the importance of innovation, but they don’t know how to achieve it. The answer is design.

Designers allow companies to stay ahead of their customers by anticipating and addressing human needs and behaviours in a complex and changing world. Technology needs to be intentionally designed for and with people. Design creates the experience of a product, system or service, the individual, social and cultural experience, and the value and the impact it has. Design is the bridge between raw invention and application.

The essence of design thinking involves empathizing deeply, listening to people and observing them to identify tough problems to address or new opportunities to explore. Design thinking marries systems analysis with outcomes-oriented problem solving. It’s relevant to the development and enhancement of services, products and business methods. It’s as applicable to large companies as it is to startups and non-profits.

Pamela D Lloyd's curator insight, August 7, 10:06 PM
Walk into any natural history museum or zoo, and you will notice placards that provide information about the exhibits. These are a form of augmented reality that we take so much for granted that we don't typically distinguish them as anything other than reality. With our new ability to carry information in our pockets, we are suddenly much more aware of that augmentation, making it feel like something new. Certainly, its ubiquity is new, but it draws much from those exhibit notices, and from books and items such as baseball cards. Incorporating fun instant info into the learning process can help energize that process, regardless of whether it's done through new technology or old.

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer)

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) | Digitala verktyg för lärandet. En skola i förändring. | Scoop.it

"According to Code.org, 90 percent of parents in the U.S. want their children to learn computer science—it will be crucial for many jobs in the near future—but only 40 percent of schools teach it. Critics claim that it is mainly the more affluent schools that offer computer science courses, thus denying those who attend poorer schools the chance to learn necessary skills. A focus on STEM is not enough: Code.org also reports that while 70 percent of new STEM jobs are in computing, only 7 percent of STEM graduates are in computer science. It is imperative that savvy schools begin to focus some STEM resources on computer science and programming.

In my opinion, parents of every student in every school at every level should demand that all students be taught how to code. They need this skill not because they’ll all go into it as a career—that isn’t realistic—but because it impacts every career in the 21st-century world. Any country recognizing that will benefit in the long term.

With the following resources, you can teach programming to every student and every age."

Makerspaces Encourage Students to Innovate and Build Critical Thinking Skills

Makerspaces Encourage Students to Innovate and Build Critical Thinking Skills | Digitala verktyg för lärandet. En skola i förändring. | Scoop.it
Spring Hill School District, a small K–12 district in southwest Arkansas, has joined the makerspace movement in a big way. The district’s massive, new makerspace was built to give teachers new ways to inspire students to hone their abilities and develop their critical thinking skills.

“All the teachers love it, and the kids love it,” says Jan Rhodes, the district’s technology coordinator for the past 25 years.

While districts like Spring Hill are implementing maker activities, there’s no single description for the makerspace movement. The best way to describe maker activities? Think about them as a means to integrate hands-on learning through experimentation, building or collaboration. That includes everything from creating cardboard robots to using 3D printers to building wearable computers.

By definition, there is no template or plan to follow. Districts implement technology of all shapes and sizes, from smartphone virtual reality viewers to electronic building blocks to notebooks and tablets.

Research Shows Students Learn Better When They Figure Things Out On Their Own

Research Shows Students Learn Better When They Figure Things Out On Their Own | Digitala verktyg för lärandet. En skola i förändring. | Scoop.it
In some instances, research illuminates a topic and changes our existing beliefs. For example, here’s a post that challenges the myth of preferred learning styles. Other times, you might hear about a study and say, “Well, of course that’s true!” This might be one of those moments.
Last year, Dr. Karlsson Wirebring and fellow researchers published a study that supports what many educators and parents have already suspected: students learn better when they figure things out on their own, as compared to being told what to do.

Becoming Innovative: 15 New Ideas Every Teacher Should Try - TeachThought

Becoming Innovative: 15 New Ideas Every Teacher Should Try - TeachThought | Digitala verktyg för lärandet. En skola i förändring. | Scoop.it
What are the latest emerging trends in education?

As trends to do, these are changing almost yearly. Consider how quiet iPads in the classroom have been recently, whereas three years ago they were going to replace teachers and were (unsarcastically) compared to magic. While mobile devices like the iPad can indeed parallel a kind of magic in the learning process, it obviously has to ‘fit’ into a progressive supporting ecology of assessment, curriculum, and instruction.

With that in mind, we’ve created a list of 15 (the graphic plus 3 bonus items below) new ideas every teacher should try. Not all will fit or work–again, it depends on the ecology of the classroom, school, and so on. But each of these ideas below–some learning models, some concepts, and some technologies–can be transformational for students, and your teaching.

This really is a good little framework to use as a 'to do' list in future planning. The implicit message is that ICTs alone won't fix your problems, but combine them with innovative teaching approaches and unit structures and fit them to the 'ecology' of your school and class, and you will be getting close!
Hollie Brassington's curator insight, June 3, 6:51 AM
This is a fantastic summary of ways to transform learning - in fact the PBL and Skype examples in combination with the current hot topic in the news about the value and virtues of allrefugees (Karl Stefanovic on WIN Today show)  makes me think I could devise an English  Unit on refugees where students interact through  these digital pedagogical tools  with actual refugees now in Australia to find out their stories and to hear about racial prejudice towards 'boat people', and then write a letter to the editor type assessment dispelling the negativities towards refugees via an online newspaper or blog situation. These could be shared with actual refugees to show them they have the support of Australian citizens....

Flexspan: Ny avhandling om lärande i virtuella lärmiljöer

Flexspan: Ny avhandling om lärande i virtuella lärmiljöer | Digitala verktyg för lärandet. En skola i förändring. | Scoop.it

Ten Things That Happen When Kids Engage in Design Thinking – John Spencer

Ten Things That Happen When Kids Engage in Design Thinking – John Spencer | Digitala verktyg för lärandet. En skola i förändring. | Scoop.it
Creativity and innovation have become buzzwords in education (though not as quite as
trendy as hipster beards or skinny jeans). It’s easy to look at the maker movement and write it off as yet another trend in education. But what if it’s not just a trend? What if it’s an idea whose time has come?

For years, schools have been stuck in a one-size-fits-all factory model, where students passively consume content. But here’s the thing: kids aren’t widgets. While one-size-fits-all works great for socks, it’s not ideal for minds. Kids need to dream and wonder and imagine. They need to design and build and tinker.

This is why I love design thinking. It’s a flexible framework that guides students through specific phases in the creative process.
