Le piattaforme di wellness 2.0 sono fatalmente destinate a diffondersi anche in Italia come un efficace strumento di prevenzione e di promozione della salute.

Per essere realmente efficaci, comunque, occorre affrontare importanti sfide culturali, sociali e anche tecnologiche. A questo proposito, l'integrazione con appicazioni verticali e con dispositivi di misura diventa cruciale.

Un caso interessante è presentato dalla piattaforma everymove, che si integra con le principali app di running e walking disponibili su smartphone.

In the last two year, at Aubay Research &Technology, I and my team worked on different usages of social networks in business. In addition to ‘typical’ social crm initiatives, we also focused on other applications, where new technology may be used for supporting positive behavior changes.

 

According to the original definition of  Nobel Peace Prize Prof. Muhammad Yunus, social business identifies companies whose main objective is not profit, but the achievements of social, ethical or environmental goals. Currently, this term is used for defining a totally different concept, that is a business which adopts social networking tools and practices in order to be more profitable. According to the manifesto of Jive, a well known software company, “The Social Business allows and rewards open conversation between colleagues, partners and customers. It relies on the power of social connections to shape new products and services, and to propel new revenue and earnings growth. It embraces Web 2.0 technology in the form of Social Business Software to enable this critical change.”

 

Our approach aims to harmonize these two different visions of social business, trying to achieve ethical and environmental goals in order to obtain more profitability, by using social networking tools and practices. Actually, we don’t pretend to use this as a general business rule, which would be unrealistic, but there are some specific areas where it can be very effective.

 

Corporate Wellness is a perfect example. It is a program for promoting wellness among employees through the adoption of healthy lifestyles, such as  balanced nutrition, regular physical activity and stress control. Adopting healthy lifestyles is a great benefit for employees, because it dramatically reduces risk factors for high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, stroke and even some types of cancer. It is a social benefit, because it has a positive impact on public healthcare costs. And it also provides benefits for companies, because it reduces absenteeism and increases morale and productivity in the work place. Even in a difficult economic landscape, Corporate Wellness is a worthwhile investment that can provide a ROI of 3$ per each invested dollar in 18-24 months. Internet and mobile technologies are the most suitable tools for implementing wellness programs, because they allow access anywhere, anytime. Internet-based Corporate Wellness initiatives are already very popular in US, while Europe, and especially Italy, show some delay, mainly due to a different social security context. But the economy crisis, the need to reduce public expenditure and global competition, which requires higher productivity levels, are rapidly rising awareness and demand for such applications.

 

Therefore we developed a workplace health promotion portal called MyTo (www.mytraineronline.net) that helps employees in adopting healthy lifestyles, with balanced nutrition diaries and personalized training programs. Health is an individual issue, so we put a lot of effort in implementing sophisticated personalization techniques, taking into account several different indicators, such as age, sex, fitness level, weight, diseases, etc. However, the most important challenge we must face is employee motivation in subscribing and especially in maintaining their engagement during the whole program.

And here is where social networking comes to help. We found that  collaboration, sharing, gamification and even a bit of competition among colleagues, combined with the on-line support of trusted and passionate experts, can positively influence the daily health behavior of thousands users. First results are very encouraging and we believe that in the short term social networking will become a core element of most Corporate Wellness initiatives.

 

At the same time, we are planning to adopt this approach also in  the promotion of sustainable energy usage at workplace, which is another area where positive behavior can produce social and corporate benefits. Environmental regulations and increasing energy costs are driving companies towards the adoption of energy management solutions. Several experiences both in private companies and public administration show that sophisticated monitoring and control systems are much more effective if they are implemented in conjunction with behavioral initiatives that rise employee awareness and participation in avoiding energy waste. Also in this case, social networking can play an important role for ensuring long-term engagement and consequently, significant reduction of costs and environmental impact.

Gli strumenti di social networking sono essenziali per favorire una partecipazione di lunga durata, ma anche l'integrazione con strumenti di monitoraggio della salute (pressione, glicemia, ecc.) è essenziale, in quanto consente da un lato di evidenziare i reali benefici ottenuti, dall'altro di individuare tempestivamente eventuali problemi.

A questo proposito, gli smartphone giocheranno un ruolo sempre più rilevante.
