Why does digital sound better than analog?

Why does digital sound better than analog? | Digital v.s Analog | Scoop.it
A few audiophiles may be the last analog holdouts, but everyone else loves digital! Read this article by Steve Guttenberg on CNET News.
Aaron McGruder's insight:

In the end i enjoy both just as much. Growing up with my grandmother I grew up listening to record players and old school music and i love the warm sothing feel of the music in analog recording. On the other hand the new music I listen to is just as enjoyable its just different. Apples and Oranges

Aaron McGruder's insight:

Carl Beatty, a veteran engineer and Professor of Production and Engineering at Berklee College of Music.

In this video Carl speakes about how he enjoys analog better than digital. He also states that the comperison is more of and engineer, producer and artist preference because the adverage listener is not looking for those specific qualities. As long as people connect with the music emotionally they consider it great music.

Arduino powered 5 Million samples per second oscope

Arduino powered 5 Million samples per second oscope | Digital v.s Analog | Scoop.it

This Arduino powered 5 Million samples per second oscilloscope uses an external CA3306 analog to digital converter.  the Ca3306 produces less glitches than the AD775 did.  Here is the video on YouTube: http://youtu.be/f_RD1oQuKiw

I fixed the memory issue and even sped it up some more by changing the array from 320 integers to 240 bytes.  Integers are 16 bits long and bytes are 8 bits long, so it is much faster and uses less memory.

Aaron McGruder's insight:

Our ability to create hardware and soft ware that can effectively recreate analog sound is what will give the digital process of recording the upper hand over its older competitor.

I liked that musician, Derek Smith mixed both analog and digital to produce new music. He has a concept and worked hard to bring it to life

Why does analog sound better than digital?

Why does analog sound better than digital? | Digital v.s Analog | Scoop.it
Analog was the original sound 'format'; it's what humans were 'designed' to hear. Read this article by Steve Guttenberg on CNET News.
Aaron McGruder's insight:

Some people believe that the purity of the music is being lost in digital recordings.

Article talks about why analog consoles sound better than digital. Author is very opinionated and biased.

Gives good reasoning.

Julianne Cardinale's curator insight, November 4, 2014 10:10 AM

Some people feel that digital recording takes away from music rather than adding extra quality.

HowStuffWorks "Does digital sound better than analog?" | Digital v.s Analog | Scoop.it
Does digital sound better than analog? It all depends on the way you record that sound. Take a look at analog vs. digital sound quality and technology.
Aaron McGruder's insight:

I beleive that the use of digital recording will be used more the better the technology gets. Some people are just old school and prefer that things be done a certain way.The pros of digital over analog are that digital can be compressed and easier to manage. You can also have a higher sampling rate and increased precision. The pros of analog over digital is that it is one continous sound and does not have to be imitated to reproduce. While with digital you would have to create the continous flow of sound for it to feel more natural. Both styles are still very relevant and competing. Sometimes things are just better the old fashion way but more modern techniques can be just as effective.

Pros of Analog or Digital recording/sound.

-Digital Recording allows much more versatility in many aspects especially when instruments are not accesible.

- Tranfer files, easier to manage,Digital Recording is much easier to manage allows for easier file transfers for collaborating or co-production.

- Analog has a real sound as if you are hearing someone play close to you. while less precise it sounds much more natural.

Cons of Analog or Digital recording/sound.

-Though you have a plethora of software instruments to choose from digital audio it falls short of the real sound making it sound like it's pieced together, less smooth.

- Frequencies make something sound warm/fuller when low as apposed to the airy sound of real instruments in a room.

-With more advanced consoles and digital studio hardware there's a lot of room for improvement on the smallest of aspects, analog doesn't leave much room for improvement.

Digital vs. analog audio: Which sounds better?

Even among audiophiles there's no consensus as to whether analog or digital sounds better. Read this article by Steve Guttenberg on CNET News.
Aaron McGruder's insight:

Personal preference is the biggest part of this battle. I feel as though they are both just as good it just depends on the mood of the music. A love song would sound better recorded in analog while a club hit would sond better digital.

Jose Pedro Alegria's curator insight, September 9, 2013 2:03 PM

This article made me realize that its all about personal preference. Digital and analog both sound good. It's up to you, how you want your music to sound. I prefer analog but I'd have to acquire a big budget.

Samantha Cabral's curator insight, January 19, 2014 6:49 PM

He writes how one might not be better than the other, it just depends on the person's preference. Even though he does like analog consoles, he is not biased.
The article could have gotten more in depth about both consoles to compare/contrast them.
