AmazonFresh set to expand?

AmazonFresh set to expand? | Digital Transformation of Businesses | Scoop.it
After five years, Amazon’s local grocery-delivery service remains in limited test mode, but the Internet giant recently has made some moves that could set the stage for expansion.

“It is a very convenient service, but picking, packing and delivering grocery orders is expensive,” said former technology Vice President Nadia Shouraboura, who left Amazon last year to create Hointer, a robot-operated clothing store in Seattle’s University District.

“Just like apparel, the grocery business is both large and ripe for innovation, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Amazon be very persistent and patient,” she said. “Jeff always thinks long-term.”

Farid Mheir's insight:

I've said this before: looks like Amazon will use grocery delivery to put trucks on the road and offer same-day or next-day delivery while bypassing UPS-FedEx and other carriers altogether. This will both bring down its costs (delivery accounts for 10-15% of the online costs) but also may prove that having a physical store presence is not required for online pure plays. We'll see...

43% of the US workforce will be freelancers in 2020 | Digital Transformation of Businesses | Scoop.it

By exploiting technology to enable workforce transformation, leading companies will create highly adaptable and change-ready enterprise environments that are able to meet today’s dynamic digital demands.

This liquid workforce competitive advantage is apparent as IT and business executives surveyed report that “deep expertise for the specialized task at hand” was only the fifth most important characteristic they required for employees to perform well in a digital work environment – other qualities such as ‘the ability to quickly learn’ or ‘shift gears’ were ranked higher.

Farid Mheir's insight:

Accenture new report shows that digital transformation enables something big in the workforce: autonomy.

C'est toute la dimension de la protection sociale des travailleurs qui doit être repensée. Comment s'assurer que l'État protège ces travailleurs et éviter de s'en remettre au marché, comme c'est le cas pour Uber?

Russell R. Roberts, Jr.'s curator insight, February 11, 1:52 AM

Thanks to reporter Farid Mheir for this look at the future workplace. Today's workplace environment is a lot different than the studios I once inhabited during my broadcasting career.  When I left the broadcast business in 2011, many of my station's staff were part-time engineers, technicians, IT consultants, and program managers.  Our full-time staff was very small.  That trend is accelerating, with many broadcast stations fully automated with new staff being hired for specific sales, IT, and engineering tasks.  The employee of the near future will work at a variety of temporary tasks for several companies--a "freelancer" with skills going to the highest bidder.  This trend will impact business health, insurance, and retirement plans.  A job for life with retirement at age 65 will no longer be the standard for most of the working public.  Aloha, Russ.

Thanks to reporter Farid Mheir for this warning.  In the months ahead, many formerly "secure" jobs will be staffed with robots, artificial intelligence, and sophisticated data processing equipment. Those of us who have been "downsized" (I'm one) from the communications, entertainment, and broadcast engineering career fields understand how devastating this trend will be.  It's the old argument:  people are too expensive and unreliable.  Machines don't get sick, take vacations, or complain.  Everything is bottom line these days.  No job or position is immune.  Those who still have jobs will be servicing and programming the machines that replaced people.  Be careful what you wish for--you may get it.  Aloha, Russ.

A Look Inside Cybercriminal Call Centers via @BrianKrebs | Digital Transformation of Businesses | Scoop.it

Crooks who make a living via identity theft schemes, dating scams and other con games often run into trouble when presented with a phone-based challenge that requires them to demonstrate mastery of a language they don’t speak fluently. Enter the criminal call center, which allows scammers to outsource those calls to multi-lingual men and women who can be hired to close the deal.

Farid Mheir's insight:

More evidence that digital security and privacy issues often resort to "Traditional methods" to perform crimes - what is called social engineering. Here is a description of call centers to impersonate people in multiple languages when companies try to verify your identity byphone during a digital transaction.

Krebs also offers a solution which would requires us all to have a voice "fingerprint" available to validate our true identity.

Sums of up to €20,000 are being offered to Apple workers from hackers.

In this case - whether this particular information about Apple is true or not - it raises the concern of how valuable the digital information can be in certain cases, especially for competitive intelligence and intellectual property protection.

Companies would be wise to inform their employees of the risk and have them report any suspicious activity or contacts to their leaders or security team.

Digitalization Strategy Framework

Digitalization Strategy Framework | Digital Transformation of Businesses | Scoop.it

Digitization trends are reshaping the industrial world. The risk of disruption brings with it significant opportunities. BCG’s Digitization Strategy Framework provides companies with the tools needed to capture new digitization opportunities. The framework consists of a diagnosis phase that helps industrial organizations set the basis for strategy development through understanding global trends, customer needs, and competitors' activities, and to evaluate current capabilities and gaps. Organizations can then employ a set of building blocks to develop a successful digitization strategy:

Farid Mheir's insight:

Websites are still screwing up user experiences via @troyhunt | Digital Transformation of Businesses | Scoop.it

We’re a few days into the new year and I’m sick of it already. This is fundamental web usability 101 stuff that plagues us all and makes our online life that much more painful than it needs to be. None of these practices – none of them – is ever met with “Oh how nice, this site is doing that thing”. Every one of these is absolutely driving the web into a dismal abyss of frustration and much ranting by all.

And before anyone retorts with “Oh you can just install this do-whacky plugin which rewrites the page or changes the behaviour”, no, that’s entirely not the point. Not only does it not solve a bunch of the problems, it shouldn’t damn well have to! How about we all just agree to stop making the web a less enjoyable place and not do these things from the outset?
