Inspiring Writing using Adventure Game Creation with Book Creator App - Sept 2014 Blog Post

Inspiring Writing using Adventure Game Creation with Book Creator App - Sept 2014 Blog Post | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
This term I have been working with upper Key Stage 2 pupils to develop interactive adventure style games in Book Creator. One of the features of the app is it allows you to link objects such as images and text to other pages within the book. For images, tap on the image to select it, then tap on the Info icon and use the hyperlink box to type in the page number. For text, highlight the text withIn the text box and you will see a hyperlink option. This has enabled us to create games where choices, questions and decisions are asked of the user/player throughout. We have then used this as a stimulus for writing, not only creatively but also instruction and advertising. Above are a few screen shots of an example book I made but I didn't want to show the pupils too much as I wanted them to come up with their own ideas.

eBook Subscription Services are Not Viable | Good-E-Reader | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Penguin Random House UK CEO Tom Weldon has proclaimed that eBook subscription websites such as Amazon Unlimited, Scribd and Oyster are not viable business models. “We have two problems with subscriptions. We are not convinced it is what readers want. ‘Eat everything isn’t a reader’s mindset. In music or film you might want 10,000 songs or films, but I don’t think you want 10,000 books.” Weldon also said the company did not “understand the business model”, and who made money. But he acknowledged that subscription could work “in certain markets around the world in emerging economies where access to books and bookshops is extremely limited”.”

Does the Closure of Atavist Books Signal the End for Enhanced Ebooks? | Digital Book World

Does the Closure of Atavist Books Signal the End for Enhanced Ebooks? | Digital Book World | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Was last week’s announcement of the closure of multi-platform book publisher Atavist Books the beginning of the final death knell for enhanced books? Hardly. This is a death rattle that’s apparently been dragging out for twenty years. At least that’s if you believe, as I do, that the enhanced ebook finds its roots in the wonderfully experimental (but famously short-lived) hypertext fiction of the late 1980s and early 1990s.”

Apple caves in ebooks fight: what the big settlement means for you ~ GigaOm

Apple caves in ebooks fight: what the big settlement means for you ~ GigaOm | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
by Jeff John Roberts"Apple appears to have finally thrown in the towel in a two-year court fight over its role in brokering a conspiracy with publishers to fix the price of ebooks. The publishers have already paid millions to consumers, and now Apple could soon do the same under a sealed settlement that came to light on Monday."It’s not technically over but, for practical purposes, consumers can expect to collect before long. Here is a plain English Q&A about what the settlement means, and what happens next — including when a payout might occur."

Amazon and Hachette settle bitter e-book dispute - CNET

Amazon and Hachette settle bitter e-book dispute - CNET | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Amazon and publisher Hachette agreed to end their battle, bringing a close to a sour dispute lasting months over whether the Web giant can offer steep discounts on e-books. Neither Amazon nor Hachette, a subsidiary of French corporation Lagardère Publishing, disclosed the terms of their deal reached Thursday. But the companies confirmed in a joint statement that Hachette now has the right to set the price of its e-books. The deal takes effect next year, when the two companies are set to resume normal relations. Amazon, the top online retailer in the US, will now feature the publisher's books in its promotions -- a marked departure from its behavior over the past few months.”

The interactive eBook dilemma: embed video directly, or link out using HTML widgets | Talking New Media

The interactive eBook dilemma: embed video directly, or link out using HTML widgets | Talking New Media | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
Digital publishers love the fact that they can use video content in their tablet editions, as the devices are perfect for viewing multimedia material. But video files can be large, and for complicated projects, including video directly in the project means longer download times, and more storage space eaten up in the tablet. Many negative reader reviews inside iTunes complain about the large files of some interactive magazines, for instance.
