Amazon and Hachette settle bitter e-book dispute - CNET

Amazon and Hachette settle bitter e-book dispute - CNET | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Amazon and publisher Hachette agreed to end their battle, bringing a close to a sour dispute lasting months over whether the Web giant can offer steep discounts on e-books. Neither Amazon nor Hachette, a subsidiary of French corporation Lagardère Publishing, disclosed the terms of their deal reached Thursday. But the companies confirmed in a joint statement that Hachette now has the right to set the price of its e-books. The deal takes effect next year, when the two companies are set to resume normal relations. Amazon, the top online retailer in the US, will now feature the publisher's books in its promotions -- a marked departure from its behavior over the past few months.”

eBooks vs Print – The Reasons Why Digital is Better | Good E Reader

eBooks vs Print – The Reasons Why Digital is Better | Good E Reader | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Over the course of the last decade, eBooks have become second nature to savvy readers. Not only can you purchase them in your pajamas, but they are more economical viable than new releases that come out only in hardcover. One of the big questions that readers always ask, is what are the direct benefits of reading digitally? Is there a big difference between reading in print and an eBook? Today, we look the big reasons why buying an eBook makes a ton of sense.”

Though initially surprised to see Lego so late to this space, it seems they used the time to build a more truly two-way digital/real-world play path, vs most others, in which one play form feels tacked onto the other. Can't wait to try!

The interactive eBook dilemma: embed video directly, or link out using HTML widgets | Talking New Media

The interactive eBook dilemma: embed video directly, or link out using HTML widgets | Talking New Media | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
Digital publishers love the fact that they can use video content in their tablet editions, as the devices are perfect for viewing multimedia material. But video files can be large, and for complicated projects, including video directly in the project means longer download times, and more storage space eaten up in the tablet. Many negative reader reviews inside iTunes complain about the large files of some interactive magazines, for instance.

Apple to Merge Audiobooks Into iBooks With Next iOS Update | Ink, Bits, & Pixels

Apple to Merge Audiobooks Into iBooks With Next iOS Update | Ink, Bits, & Pixels | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Apple has been selling audiobooks for far longer than they've sold ebooks, but in all that time the two book formats have been divided between iBooks and iTunes. But with the next iOS update, that could change. Apple Insider reports that with the iOS 8.4 beta release, readers will find audiobooks accessible from inside the iBooks app. Within the iBooks app itself on an iPhone or iPad, audiobooks occupy their own unique collection, accessible from the pull-down menu at the top of the screen. Notably listeners can open a selectable tracklist for each book, and fast-forward or fast-rewind through a title by tapping and dragging the cover art.”

Inspiring Writing using Adventure Game Creation with Book Creator App - Sept 2014 Blog Post

Inspiring Writing using Adventure Game Creation with Book Creator App - Sept 2014 Blog Post | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
This term I have been working with upper Key Stage 2 pupils to develop interactive adventure style games in Book Creator. One of the features of the app is it allows you to link objects such as images and text to other pages within the book. For images, tap on the image to select it, then tap on the Info icon and use the hyperlink box to type in the page number. For text, highlight the text withIn the text box and you will see a hyperlink option. This has enabled us to create games where choices, questions and decisions are asked of the user/player throughout. We have then used this as a stimulus for writing, not only creatively but also instruction and advertising. Above are a few screen shots of an example book I made but I didn't want to show the pupils too much as I wanted them to come up with their own ideas.

eBook Subscription Services are Not Viable | Good-E-Reader

eBook Subscription Services are Not Viable | Good-E-Reader | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Penguin Random House UK CEO Tom Weldon has proclaimed that eBook subscription websites such as Amazon Unlimited, Scribd and Oyster are not viable business models. “We have two problems with subscriptions. We are not convinced it is what readers want. ‘Eat everything isn’t a reader’s mindset. In music or film you might want 10,000 songs or films, but I don’t think you want 10,000 books.” Weldon also said the company did not “understand the business model”, and who made money. But he acknowledged that subscription could work “in certain markets around the world in emerging economies where access to books and bookshops is extremely limited”.”

Does the Closure of Atavist Books Signal the End for Enhanced Ebooks? | Digital Book World

Does the Closure of Atavist Books Signal the End for Enhanced Ebooks? | Digital Book World | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
“ Was last week’s announcement of the closure of multi-platform book publisher Atavist Books the beginning of the final death knell for enhanced books? Hardly. This is a death rattle that’s apparently been dragging out for twenty years. At least that’s if you believe, as I do, that the enhanced ebook finds its roots in the wonderfully experimental (but famously short-lived) hypertext fiction of the late 1980s and early 1990s.”
