Though initially surprised to see Lego so late to this space, it seems they used the time to build a more truly two-way digital/real-world play path, vs most others, in which one play form feels tacked onto the other. Can't wait to try!

The interactive eBook dilemma: embed video directly, or link out using HTML widgets | Talking New Media

The interactive eBook dilemma: embed video directly, or link out using HTML widgets | Talking New Media | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
Digital publishers love the fact that they can use video content in their tablet editions, as the devices are perfect for viewing multimedia material. But video files can be large, and for complicated projects, including video directly in the project means longer download times, and more storage space eaten up in the tablet. Many negative reader reviews inside iTunes complain about the large files of some interactive magazines, for instance.

In our moves to have students read all their content from a screen are we doing them any favours? This article introduces the concept of the bi literal brain and argues that students need to develop both linear and non-linear reading strategies.

Changing how people learn with digital textbooks | TeleRead | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
EBooks are changing education, starting from the teachers on down. Two recent stories have showed how developers are using digital textbooks to change the way teachers and students engage. The first story comes out of Pennsylvania where teachers at Mercersburg Academy have created textbooks they want using iBooks. According to a release, teachers have created a suite 22 e-textbooks on a number of topics such as Latin, robotics, history and math.

Apple caves in ebooks fight: what the big settlement means for you ~ GigaOm

Apple caves in ebooks fight: what the big settlement means for you ~ GigaOm | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it
by Jeff John Roberts"Apple appears to have finally thrown in the towel in a two-year court fight over its role in brokering a conspiracy with publishers to fix the price of ebooks. The publishers have already paid millions to consumers, and now Apple could soon do the same under a sealed settlement that came to light on Monday."It’s not technically over but, for practical purposes, consumers can expect to collect before long. Here is a plain English Q&A about what the settlement means, and what happens next — including when a payout might occur."

Add Bookry Widgets to iTunes U

Add Bookry Widgets to iTunes U | Digital Textbooks K12 | Scoop.it

Via Cyndi Danner-Kuhn

Cyndi Danner-Kuhn's curator insight, May 19, 4:59 PM

Today we’re delighted to announce iTunes U support for all your Bookry widgets.

In addition to using your widgets in your Multi-Touch books made with iBooks Author, you can also place them in any course on iTunes U. This is how it works:

Create your widgets on Bookry.com as before, using your computer or iPad.After creating your widget, tap on the ‘iTunes U and App Link’ tab.You are then presented with a unique widget code for you to place on iTunes U.

To view the widgets, all your students need to do is download the free Bookry Widgets App to their iPad and enter the widget code – simple!

So, if you want to add a Quiz to your course on iTunes U, simply upload your course documentation (e.g. Multi-Touch book, Keynote, PDF, Pages etc.) to iTunes U, then compliment this with your Bookry Quiz widget code, together with the codes of any other Bookry widgets you want to include. You can also provide them with a code for your book project (get this from your book tab on Bookry.com), so that they can download multiple widgets in one go.
