Report: Digital Badges Help Learners Demonstrate Accomplishments, Need ... - T.H.E. Journal

Report: Digital Badges Help Learners Demonstrate Accomplishments, Need ... - T.H.E. Journal | Euneos courses and ErasmusPlus information | Scoop.it

Digital badges can help students pursue personal learning pathways and provide a standardized platform for learners to demonstrate their accomplishments, according to a new report from the Alliance for Excellent Education and the Mozilla Foundation.

The report, "Expanding Education and Workforce Opportunities Through Digital Badges," examines how digital badges can be used to improve student learning and outcomes. It explains what digital badges are and how they work, provides examples of digital badges that have already been implemented, and speculates on the future of the system.

According to the report, digital badges are "credentials that represent skills, interests, and achievements earned by an individual through specific projects, programs, courses, and other activities." They provide a digital hyperlink to information about the badge's associated skills and the projects or tasks the badge holder has completed to earn it.

Euneos's insight:

Digital badges may be as unknown to others as they are to me. Now I have a good chance to get rid of my ignorance :-).

They provide a digital hyperlink to information about the badge's associated skills and the projects or tasks the badge holder has completed to earn it.

“Digital badges are making anytime, anywhere learning a reality for learners of all ages who want to pursue their interests with tangible results in real time,” said Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education and former governor of West Virginia, in a prepared statement. “Badges bridge the divide between formal and informal education, and they have the power to transform competency-based learning and hiring practices.”

How much time do school districts spend on standardized testing? This much.

Exactly how much standardized testing are school districts subjecting students to these days? A nearly staggering amount, according to a new analysis, The Washington Post reports.
Euneos's insight:

The opinions of teachers and of other professionals of education are divided when it comes to standardized testing of students. When school education transforms into digital learning, e-assessment will replace testing on paper. What is standardized testing like today? What will be its future?

The 6 Types Of Assessments (And How They’re Changing)

The 6 Types Of Assessments (And How They’re Changing) | Euneos courses and ErasmusPlus information | Scoop.it
Testing, especially any sort of standardized testing tends to get a bad rap. Teachers complain that they spend too much time teaching to a test.
The post The 6 Types Of Assessments (And How They’re Changing) appeared first on Edudemic.
Euneos's insight:

Assessment should develop into e-assessment when learning transforms from non-digital to digital. Does a child grow taller if you measure him or her more often? No. Testing in school is based on the idea that a child learns better when tested. So, mental measuring has some effect on the child, whereas physical measuring doesn't have. Sounds reasonable. But is it true?

Testing is so popular in my country that one of the main things children learn in school is how to be tested. Many are so indoctrinated after school that they can't even figure out life without testing. Unfortunately, there are only few jobs where employees are tested on a standing basis ;-).

Kaggle's algorithms show machines are getting too good at judging humans

Kaggle's algorithms show machines are getting too good at judging humans | Euneos courses and ErasmusPlus information | Scoop.it
Kaggle, a San Francisco-based startup that hosts data science competitions, has uncovered some disconcerting insights about human behavior in its two-year run. At times, its founders have been surp...
Euneos's insight:

To get the computer to give an essay the same score a human grader would. This is a competition task prized $100 000. Says Martin O'Leary, "human graders are rarely in agreement. They are swayed by irrelevant, aesthetic factors like how neatly a student writes. Unlike an algorithm, they award scores that seem random."
That's what I thought when I as a teacher compared the grades I gave to those given by the assessors of the National Finnish Jury of A-level tests. Fortunately, the grades I gave were never really counted. Only those given by the assessors did. Only one of my colleagues never corrected the tests. Ridiculous, she said, and sent them to the jury without assessment ;-).
