Carol Ann Tomlinson, author of “The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners,” is the country’s preeminent scholar on differentiated instruction. Tomlinson defines differentiated learning as “ensuring that what a student learns, how he/she learns it, and how the student demonstrates what he/she has learned is a match for that student’s readiness level, interests, and preferred mode of learning.” She likens the reluctance to integrate modern knowledge of the learning process into the classroom to settling for a Model T instead of embracing 21st-century engineering.

Differentiation works when students take responsibility for their own learning.  Students in particular those doing A levels are given booklets, notes, presentations and textbooks with lesson plans and schemes of work.  When a teacher walks into the classroom students should not be sitting waiting for the teacher to tell them what to do.  They should already be engaged in looking over their own notes and ready to ask the teacher questions about aspects of the course that they are not certain of. Or ready to ask where they can get more information.

 

Most students have I-pads, mobile phones that can access the whole web.  They can look for information on youtube for most subjects which can add to their learning.  Differentiation has never been easier.  The teacher's job is to give out the resources, point students to where to find information, give overviews of the lessons based on the syllabus, which he students also have.  During class, time should be spent  understanding the information, discussions,  showing how to answer exam questions, followed by essays.  This is 21st Century learning and it works!

If you haven’t tried a free MOOC, I’d do it sooner than later. In recent weeks, the whole MOOC project took a hit when a University of Pennsylvania study found what was becoming empirically obvious — that MOOCs generally have very low participation and completion rates, and what’s more, most of the students taking the courses are “disproportionately educated, male, [and] wealthy,” and from the United States. This study, combined with other disappointing experiments and findings, will likely make universities think twice about sinking money into creating MOOCs (they can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 to develop). It might take another 6-12 months to see the shift. But I’d hazard a guess that this January might be the peak of the free MOOC trend. Enjoy them while they last. Whatever their shortcomings, they can be quite informative, and you can’t beat the price.

The insights revealed through the previous studies serves to codify what many educators, and even more marketers knew intuitively; free always begs the question of quality. Don't hear what I'm not saying. I'm not saying ALL MOOCs are low quality, I'm merely saying that without academic rigor and effective management, even the best intentions can slide off the rails.

 

I too had noted a number of previous MOOC supporters distancing themselves from the initiatives. Was there ever an identified demand for MOOCs, or were they simply a result of benevolent thinking? Regardless, it is interesting that the 'target audience' for MOOCs are apparently the ones taking least advantage of them. Perhaps the age old marketing rendition of supply and demand has merit still has merit.

More recent researchers have been quick to highlight that in a world of rapid technological change, today’s students are demonstrating serious signs of disengagement. As Marc Prensky highlights in ‘Engage Me or Enrage Me – What Today’s Learners Demand’ (Prensky, 2005,p.2):


“Rather than being empowered to choose what they want … and to see what interests them … and to create their own personalized identity – as they are in the rest of their lives – in school, they must eat what they are served. And what they are being served is, for the most part, stale, bland, and almost entirely stuff from the past. Yesterday’s education for tomorrow’s kids.”


The challenge is patently clear – schools have to embrace the ‘megachange’ required and construct new paradigms for learning in the twenty first century world. Mavers made the comment that:


“As digital technologies proliferate and become established in the everyday world of home, work and community, schools are inhabited by young people who are experienced users of a range of media and whose use is characterized by agency and adaptability.” (MAvErS, 2007, P.52) 3The Place of Virtual, Pedagogic and Physical Space in the 21st Century Classroom — Stephen Harris Page 5 No longer is the change a topic for conversation, it is an imperative.


Guski talked about the importance of spatial perception in school architecture, highlighting that ‘we don’t only see an object, we also feel, smell, taste and hear it’. (Guski, 2000, p.2) and Walden picks up that same spatial theme stating that:


“A space is much more than four walls, floor and ceiling. The spatial conditions that should be considered for human well-being include color scheme, lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation, acoustics, smells and furnishings. All these aspects can significantly influence the sense of well-being and readiness to learn and therefore learning performance.” (WALDEN, 2009, P.78)

In this research paper Graham Hall and Guy Cook explore teacher attitudes to own-language use in the classroom. They conducted a global survey and interviews with practising teachers.
They found evidence of widespread own-language use within ELT, and suggest that teachers’ attitudes towards own-language use, and their classroom practices, are more complex than usually acknowledged. The findings also suggest that there is a potential gap between mainstream ELT literature and teachers’ practices on the ground.

What I like about this idea is the centrality of learning as opposed to the centrality of the device. We've discovered that sharing a device have far-reaching and positive possibilities for networking, interaction, teamwork and collaboration in the formal learning environment. OLPC is an example of a notion that goes the other way - individualism, not to mention, the complexities when trying to enable young learners to focus.
