Why the School-As-Factory Metaphor Still Pervades

Why the School-As-Factory Metaphor Still Pervades | Digital Teaching | Scoop.it
Why has the factory system remained such a strong metaphor for education for so long?

Via Beth Dichter

Beth Dichter's curator insight, May 15, 2014 3:17 AM

How many times have you heard or read about the school-as-a-factory, how public schools were created to help move children from farm-to-factory? Today this metaphor may be out of place, but conversations around education still revolve around terms that relate to factories. Think of Common Core and how business has been a prime player in the creation of the standards.

This post explores this issue and provides a number of great visuals that help bring the discussion into focus.

A framework for interaction and cognitive engagement in connectivist learning contexts

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, May 4, 2014 7:40 AM
Abstract

Interaction has always been highly valued in education, especially in distance education (Moore, 1989; Anderson, 2003; Chen, 2004a; Woo & Reeves, 2007; Wang, 2013; Conrad, in press). It has been associated with motivation (Mahle, 2011; Wen-chi, et al., 2011), persistence (Tello, 2007; Joo, Lim, & Kim, 2011), deep learning (Offir, et al., 2008) and other components of effective learning. With the development of interactive technologies, and related connectivism learning theories (Siemens, 2005a; Downes, 2005), interaction theory has expanded to include interactions not only with human actors, but also with machines and digital artifacts. This paper explores the characteristics and principles of connectivist learning in an increasingly open and connected age. A theory building methodology is used to create a new theoretical model which we hope can be used by researchers and practitioners to examine and support multiple types of effective educational interactions. Inspired by the hierarchical model for instructional interaction (HMII) (Chen, 2004b) in distance learning, a framework for interaction and cognitive engagement in connectivist learning contexts has been constructed. Based on cognitive engagement theories, the interaction of connectivist learning is divided into four levels: operation interactionwayfinding interaction, sensemaking interaction, and innovation interaction. Connectivist learning is thus a networking and recursive process of these four levels of interaction.

Alina Ghimpu-Hague's curator insight, May 8, 2014 10:24 AM

Aims to contribute to the construction of a more nuanced framework for connectivist practice by proposing a theoretical model that integrates two of connectivism's core concepts, Wayfinding Interaction and Sensemaking Interaction, with aspects of Bloom's revised taxonomy.

8 things every teacher can do to create an innovative classroom | eSchool News | eSchool News | Digital Teaching | Scoop.it
Innovation is a trait that I desperately want to instill in my students, and many teachers I talk to seem to share that goal. In the current climate of high stakes testing, state standards, and prescribed learning outcomes, it can be incredibly difficult to foster an atmosphere of innovation and creativity that inspires students. But rest assured, it is possible.

Here, I outline eight basic principles for the “Innovative Classroom,” around which I designed a middle school course called Physical Computing. Some of the projects and tools are specific to that course, but I think the fundamental ideas could be applied to almost any course at any level.

Using Self-Determination Theory to Improve Online Learner Motivation

Using Self-Determination Theory to Improve Online Learner Motivation | Digital Teaching | Scoop.it
According to self-determination theory, a theory developed by Deci and Ryan, three basic psychological needs affect motivation: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Susan Epps, associate professor of Allied Health Sciences, and Alison Barton, associate professor of Teaching and Learning, both at East Tennessee State University, have used this theory to develop ways to improve online learner motivation.

Via Ana Cristina Pratas

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, May 17, 2014 4:07 PM

"Creating a sense of autonomy helps students make choices that emphasize what they value, which can increase the subjective value of the learning—the sense that the learning is relevant to one’s life, Barton says.

Here are some ways to offer students choices:

  • Content—Barton has her students, who are preservice teachers, facilitate online discussions about lesson plans that each student develops. Each student gets to decide what the lesson will be, which content from the module to include, and which theories to demonstrate. “That, I hope, makes it more of a motivating experience for them because they’re writing a lesson about something they want to write about,” Barton says.
  • Format—In some instances Epps gives her students choices on assignment format such as a paper or a narrated PowerPoint presentation. “When they feel they’re choosing something that is relevant to them, they actually do better work,” Epps says.
  • Grade weighting—In the past, Barton has offered students options on how much various assignments, quizzes, and tests will count toward the final grade. “If they’re not great test takers, you may offer them an option where their assignments or final projects are given more weight,” she says."
