ASCD Express 11.20 - A Road Map for Creative Instruction

ASCD Express 11.20 - A Road Map for Creative Instruction | Digital Storytelling | Scoop.it
Students who learn in a creative environment, are exposed to creative activities and assignments, and observe their teacher modeling creative thinking will become more creative thinkers (Sternberg & Williams, 1996). A creative learning environment that embraces students and engagement along with critical thinking and creative thinking skills is essential to student achievement (Boykin & Noguera, 2011, 2012; Marks, 2000, as cited in Jensen, 2013). To plan the instruction that matches your creativity nurturing classroom enviornment, first identify the nonnegotiables. The nonnegotiables consist of the curricular standards, the required content, and the skills that are the target of a lesson (Drapeau, 2004). Then, choose one of four roads on the Creativity Road Map or combine roads to intentionally integrate creative instruction with content.

I was excited to see this finding because I teach compassionate listening as a skill in the Stanford Compassion Training. Students in the training learn to deliberately do exactly what the participants in this study were using to assess compassion.

1) The first step is what I call “listening with the whole body.” This means literally tuning in to the person who is speaking.  “Compassionate” body language includes:

Turning toward the speaker, not just with your head, but positioning your whole body to face the speaker.

Overwatch and the pleasure of transmedia narratives - Kill Screen

Overwatch and the pleasure of transmedia narratives - Kill Screen | Digital Storytelling | Scoop.it
Before Winston, a glasses-clad gorilla scientist, was leaping across maps to crush his enemies in the chaotic multiplayer battles of Overwatch, he was merely a young ape with big aspirations and an affinity for peanut butter. But you wouldn’t know that from merely playing the game. You’ll find no calculated, story-driven campaign in Blizzard’s competitive team-based multiplayer shooter. Overwatch’s character-driven narrative is instead trickled elsewhere: in genuinely endearing animated shorts, character-focused one-off webcomics, and short website-bound character biographies. The latter-most isn’t uncommon within videogames, the second less so, and the first is the most uncommon of them all, the three…

Some thoughts on a method I'm starting to apply - comments welcome!

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, September 11, 2015 10:15 AM

Simon, I'm always a fan of your stuff, but I'm especially loving your insights and endorsement of the persona approach. The psychology of persona development is a subject near and dear to my heart.  It plays a big role in what we teach in the certificate program on Brand Psychology and Audience Engagement I designed with Dr. Jerri Lynn Hogg at Fielding Graduate University.  We work with story and 'the storied nature of life' as the core expression of a brand's values; similarly we use the psychology of motivations, needs and goals to understand the audience and as the basis for developing the persona story to get the right "fit" between the brand/cause/entertainment property and the audience. (We use 'brand' broadly to mean any encapsulated idea, from social cause or entertainment experience to commercial or organizational brand.) If you are telling your core story, it is also your brand promise. We all, as consumers, have stories about how any consumed experience integrates, inspires, or changes our personal story trajectory.  Lots of science on how the brain processes using story (i.e. narrative structure) to make meaning.  By creating a brand-audience link through psych fundamentals built on story, by definition it builds the trust and authenticity--creating a relationship of respect and reciprocity. As you well know from what you do, the development of a clear story arc with emotional purpose and intention allows you to construct and tell your story across media to create a larger experience or storyworld, whether a developed canon or an internal psychological experience. At the end of the day, identifying the psychological drivers on both sides (story and audience) makes the story resonate deeply with the audience which is experienced as respect.

The Digital Writing Process

The Digital Writing Process | Digital Storytelling | Scoop.it

Now, with nearly 20 years of middle and high school teaching behind me, I still respect the writing process approach and its benefits. I also recognize that the nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources. Of course, today’s composers still must meet the commonly accepted conventions of the genre in which they are engaged, but our visual digital culture creates different demands than did the primarily print text-based world.

"The nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources". We completely agree with this phrase. Our way of writing is changing more than we notice. I figure that adults notice this more than young people, because this last group were born with the Internet. Nevertheless, its very important to learn how to write properly, this article provides the tools and the practice we need.
