Deserving attention: what story have you really listened to lately?

Deserving attention: what story have you really listened to lately? | Digital Stories and Education | Scoop.it

Attention is scarce. We all have oh so much to do. And for many of us it’s so hard to manage our time and stay focused with an increasing number of channels and messages. It’s not about getting attention anymore, it’s about deserving attention. For brands it’s harder to get through and ‘gain attention’. Why is that?

Carl Gustav Jung once said the reason for evil in the world is that people are not able to tell their stories. We don’t always understand the stories we are ourselves. And people’s stories are often not heard. To deserve attention we must pay attention. To get our stories and content shared and acted upon, we must understand the stories of the people forming the communities we want to live and thrive in first.

Google Earth Tour Builder lets you tell stories through maps

Google Earth Tour Builder lets you tell stories through maps | Digital Stories and Education | Scoop.it

"Google has used Earth and Maps to tell tales of unfolding tragedies and soldiers fighting for our country. Now its opening up those tools to the public, allowing users to build what they're calling "Tours" through Google Earth. Tour Builderwas released in honor of Veterans Day and it allows users to create narratives tied to points on a map. The process is pretty simple: you drop a marker, add some text, photos or videos and you're on your way. As you piece together your tale, dropping pins, you can pull the viewer down into Street View or fly to a particular angle on a 3D landmark."

Lucas and Spielberg on storytelling in games: 'it's not going to be Shakespeare'

Lucas and Spielberg on storytelling in games: 'it's not going to be Shakespeare' | Digital Stories and Education | Scoop.it

Bryan Bishop:  'Speaking Wednesday at a panel at the University of Southern California — joined by Microsoft’s Don Mattrick — George Lucas and Steven Spielberg argued that introducing the concept of interactivity fundamentally changes the experience. "They’re always going to be different," Lucas said when asked if movies and games were going to become more similar. "They’re never going to be the same."'

"I think ultimately the big game of the next five years will be a game where you empathize very strongly with the characters, and it’s aimed at women and girls. Because they like empathetic games," -  G. Lucas

Via The Digital Rocking Chair
António Maneira's insight:

It seems these authors agree that evolution in gaming will bring new forms of storytelling as the game industry is investing a lot more in characters when designing the games.

The way that we connect to static story as opposed to interactive story is an interesting topic. The masters of the genres discuss it here.

It’s not uncommon for designers to confuse a beautiful looking product with one that works beautifully. A great technique for creating smarter, better products is to approach them using story-centered design.

7 Student-Tested Digital Storytelling Tools | Digital Stories and Education | Scoop.it

"Last month, in my classroom version of DIY BYOD, my fifth-graders dove into the world of digital storytelling. I gave them two prompts: they could write about “going down the rabbit hole” (in honor of our reading of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), in other words, about the day everything changed; or they could write about “life lessons from the fifth grade.”
