Can the sharing economy and public transportation replace car ownership?  Uber is testing this idea out by partnering with a local San Francisco real estate developer to promote ride-sharing and public transportation. Residents of the new 3,000-unit Parkmerced community will receive a $100 monthly transportation subsidy. As part of this agreement, Uber will also cap the fares of any UberPool shared ride between Parkmerced and nearby BART and MUNI stations to a maximum of $5.

Now, architecture firm NBBJ and VR developer Visual Vocal are bringing together virtual reality with building information modeling (BIM). Using this new platform, architects, engineers and construction personnel will be able to preview BIM models in 4D and collaborate to make important adjustments in the design phase before real estate projects begin construction.

Now, ride-sharing services like Lyft and Uber are providing a convenient transit option for those in close-in suburban areas that can actually be cheaper than commuting if you factor in parking fees etc. Consequently, these fringe areas are becoming more popular due to housing affordability and ease of travel into the city.

People continue to push the envelope with 3D printing. Case in point - Italy will develop the first 3D-printed village. It'll be exciting to see other future applications of this upcoming technology.

With its purchase last year of Case, an innovative architecture studio, WeWork has been able to bring interior design and building information modeling (BIM) services into the fold.


The company is now exploring ways to integrate real-time costs and environmental impact of materials, and to bring furniture/fixture manufacturing in-house.

Delivery in a day is just too slow. At least, that seems to be the philosophy at Amazon, which in the last year has quietly built out a network of at least 58 Amazon Prime Now hubs in the US to fulfill one- and two-hour deliveries. The buildout of the Prime Now hubs goes toward the goal...

With eCommerce gaining popularity and customers demanding faster deliveries, retailers like Amazon want to be closer to urban areas to facilitate quicker package transport. Amazon now has 58 Prime Now hubs, which serve as last-mile distribution centers, smaller warehouses closer to urban cores.

The ability to print objects as one single continuous piece will allow 3D printers to create lighter and more efficient heat exchangers, which could be used in heating and cooling systems to save building owners on utility costs.


Who would have thought that 3D printers could help print more efficient components? It'll be exciting to see what other types of unforeseen applications of 3D printers emerge in the near future.

Flirtey has completed its first FAA-approved drone delivery in an urban setting. The drone used a rope to hold the package and although this probably isn't the most secure method, it's a huge milestone for drone delivery in the U.S., as it could help pave the way Amazon's Prime Air drone delivery service.
