"Students care. When they care and mobilize, the world changes around them. Students at the William M. Davies Career & Technical High School in Lincoln, Rhode Island discovered that Hurricane Sandy had severely affected family members of one teacher, whose sister in law was from Brick, New Jersey. They jumped right in, using social media to mobilize and create awareness of the extent of the damage and to lend a helping hand."
From the Teaching & Learning Showcase on ‘Assessing work placements’ at Reading .
The showcase events are a series of informal lunchtime gatherings which provide an opportunity for colleagues to share T & L practices and ideas. The format is three speakers talking about a common topical issue for ten minutes each, with time for questions and discussion at the end.
Today’s society is becoming more and more socially focused with each passing day. Social media is not simply a passing trend; it is here to stay. Now more than ever, students need to understand the basics of social media and how it can affect their future both negatively and positively. A strong or weak social media presence now affects both college admissions and the workforce.

"Rachel has been travelling up and down the country to represent the project at ALT-C in Manchester last month, and gave a talk at the RAISE Conference in Southampton the same week. Closer to home, she has spoken at the Teaching & Learning Showcase event on ‘Assessing work placements’ and will be giving further presentations to colleagues here at Reading this month and next.
She was also invited to speak at the Faculty of Life Science Teaching & Learning Showcase, in front of an audience including Vice-Chancellor Sir David Bell who had taken time out of his busy day welcoming our new Freshers to hear about her ‘Experiences with Digital Literacies’. Here’s a clip from her presentation..."
"The second part of my research into digital literacies for student employability has focussed on in-curricular placements here at Reading. Every undergraduate programme now has an embedded placement option."
