None of this adds to an easy environment within which to do businesss. Ahead of DBW, the conference organiser unveiled a survey that showed that publishers were less optimistic about the state of the book publishing industry in general and much less optimistic about their own company’s chances at survival and growth. James McQuivey, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester, which conducted the survey, said: "Publishers have started to do the hard work of making the digital transition and they’re finding that it is, indeed, hard work." And, as this piece in the Wall Street Journal indicated, the results are variable.

publishers would be wise to “think not about platforms, but audiences”. A good story should be be immersive and engaging, regardless of the delivery method. Nowadays, it appears multiple means of getting into the story, via multiple entrance portals, is expected.

Carman clarifies further; “It’s not a novel, it’s not an audio book, and it’s not a movie. It’s all three at one time. For some teen readers – the one’s publishing has lost in a rising tide of video games, movies, TV shows, the Internet, and cell phones — this is the kind of experience that will help them enjoy reading again. It’s a lifeline back to books, if you will. For traditional readers, it’s a new way to imagine what reading can be.”

For teen readers who adopt eReading, it appears the whole pie grows.

A recent PubTrak survey from R.R. Bowker indicated that teens remain reluctant when it comes to e-books. Accustomed to social media, they find that electronic stories have “too many restrictions,” according to the report.

Following its November launch, OnSwipe competitor (and TechCrunch Disrupt finalist) Pressly is bringing another major media outlet’s content to the tablet interface. The company is today announcing the launch of a new publication called Electionism. The app was built for the Media Lab, an internal product innovation team inside The Economist Group, which includes The Economist, CQ Roll Call and other businesses.
The new app offers coverage of the 2012 election in the U.S., A section called the “Latest from Twitter” aggregates tweets from candidates, political pundits, publishers and other organizations, while a “Noted Elsewhere” section allows Economist journalists to share links to what they are reading.
