"As has been widely discussed, most MOOCs reiterate the ancient form of the lecture, and do not signal much of a leap in pedagogy....the adoption of (new pedagogical models) hinges on accessibility, flexibility, and cost—not quality."

Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, July 26, 2013 7:01 AM
"As has been widely discussed, most MOOCs reiterate the ancient form of the lecture, and do not signal much of a leap in pedagogy. (As McLuhan noted, the contents of the new medium are the old media, at least at first.) The effect of MOOCs on the academy, though, is no more likely to be about pedagogy than the effect of MP3s on the music industry was about audio quality. The adoption of nontraditional forms of education hinges on accessibility, flexibility, and cost—not quality."
David J MacFadyen's curator insight, July 26, 2013 7:13 PM

Excellent discussion of the core issue that demands attention.  Higher Education costs exceed the benefits.

Will Stewart's curator insight, July 29, 2013 4:59 AM

"MOOCs are not the future of higher education.....but they do expand the horizon of the visible."

MOOCS — DIY? « Armstrong Institute for Interactive Media Studies

MOOCS — DIY? « Armstrong Institute for Interactive Media Studies | Digital Pedagogy in Vivo | Scoop.it
Domitilla Enders's insight:

What if some universities, or university consortia, can successfully market their own MOOCs? And what if, eventually, all universities will be able to do so? Coursera will try to convince you that no one can beat their marketing reach, but any university can develop one, between existing students and alumni.

DIY MOOCs would (a) allow universities to recover more of the tuition revenue associated with MOOCs, and (b) avoid the copyright problems that are arising with third-party hosts like Coursera and Udacity (Porter, 2013a; Porter, 2013b).

Ed-tech without educators is doomed

Ed-tech without educators is doomed | Digital Pedagogy in Vivo | Scoop.it

#EdTech#EdChat

Domitilla Enders's insight:

"Education is a vital human function about which not enough is known. Few would expect to get taken seriously in the health technology space, for example, with a founding team that included no MDs. Does it make sense to settle for the equivalent in the ed-tech space?"

And yet, getting educators and technologists in the same room is the holy grail of ed-tech...something that many of us are trying to promote and enable, but with little success so far.
