Ways of Working with Vocabulary on iPads. : EFL Through iPads | Digital Media in the Classroom | Scoop.it

"Nation, Schmitt, Folse, Laufer, and others recommend the explicit teaching, practicing and testing of the most frequently occurring vocabulary at the early stages of language learning, because a lack of basic lexis prevents learners comprehending reading texts and using learning and communicative strategies successfully."

Technology-Rich Learning: New Literacies and the Common Core

Technology-Rich Learning: New Literacies and the Common Core | Digital Media in the Classroom | Scoop.it

It makes sense that an emphasis on new ways of reading and writing fits easily within the Common Core umbrella. After all, a primary thrust of the new standards is college and career readiness. How can we hope to prepare our young people to thrive in today's society—in which people are connected 24 hours a day by media and coworkers may well live in different countries—without giving them some practice with new media at school?

The teachers I have studied take the preparation of students to participate in a wired world seriously, and much of this preparation involves making sure that students are able to navigate new ways of reading and writing. Here are four strategies that can help—each one closely related to one or more of the Common Core standards in English language arts and literacy.

This may be a great resource for students whose learning needs require more variation or flexibility in the way in which the unpack the text

Can Children Develop Adequately Without Books? | Jane Friedman

Can Children Develop Adequately Without Books? | Jane Friedman | Digital Media in the Classroom | Scoop.it
What does the digital media revolution mean for children’s books? For children’s literacy? Are we heading down a slippery slope of oatmeal-minded buffoonery as a culture?

Via Carisa Kluver
Lachlan Gadd's insight:

We must be careful not to rush towards digital media as the savior of 'engaging students in the 21st century'. Both digital literacy and traditional literacy maintain an importance place and space within the classroom and we must be careful not to overlook the importance of traditional literacy in the rush to meet the needs of our students with the latest and the greatest technology.

Flat Stanley Goes Mobile

Via Andrea Zeitz
Lachlan Gadd's insight:

This app is an example of how digital media can be easily accessed and used by students to engage with and develop an understanding of character and setting. Students can be encouraged to develop their own character and features and describe how their 'flat stanley' is different to their classmates and describe the environment in which they are found. Taking a compolation of pictures from a single student or an entire classes photographs and turn those into its own narative
