Jurjen Söhne's insight:

Life is all about perspective. Take the perspective of our planet earth. This changed from the moment we sent a space craft to the moon. From that moment our perspective was brought ino a complete new light. We were looking at a planet that is a living organism; one that is working hard to keep the world in balance all the time. We as her people, the human beings, we should respect her and be more responsible for our actions.

As far as our knowledge and perspective goes; the Universe is infinite, not the planet that we life on.

Social TV: fad or future?

Social TV: fad or future? | Infinite Playground on a Finite Planet | Scoop.it
Smart use of metadata is the key to building real-time, social interactions around television shows and second screens, argue Charles Dawes and Colin Dixon
Jurjen Söhne's insight:

Entertainment metadata is all the information about a particular piece of content. It's the plot details, review, cast, crew, ratings, times and channels.

It is already standardised and tagged so that links between this data and social media conversations can be easily formed and result in more meaningful exchanges. For example, actors are linked with the movies they've starred in, movies are linked to images, episodes are connected to series, and shows are connected to specific air times.

Why good hackers make good citizens

Hacking is about more than mischief-making or political subversion. As Catherine Bracy describes in this spirited talk, it can be just as much a force for good as it is for evil. She spins through some inspiring civically-minded projects in Honolulu, Oakland and Mexico City — and makes a compelling case that we all have what it takes to get involved.

The hackers gathered here are not the criminal sort who attack computer security or intercept voicemails, but believers in open government and in using technology for good.

I personally look at these hackers as heroic troublemakers, hackers who want to disrupt the status quo and transform society, promoting systemic social change.

Google is one step closer to AI Complete snapping up British start-up DeepMind

Google is one step closer to AI Complete snapping up British start-up DeepMind | Infinite Playground on a Finite Planet | Scoop.it
Search giant attracted by DeepMind's ability to mimic human thought, writes Sophie Curtis.
Jurjen Söhne's insight:

Deepmind's technology is designed to mimic human thought processes, and has so far been used in simulations, e-commerce and games.

The firm was co-founded just two years ago by neuroscientist Demis Hassabis, a former teenage chess prodigy, with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyma. Hassabis, 37, had an early career in video game design.

Hassabis predicted that artificially intelligent machines will learn "basic vision, basic sound processing, basic movement control, and basic language abilities" by the end of the decade.

Both Larry Page and Sergey Brin have said that their ultimate aim is for Google Search to become 'AI-complete', meaning that it will be just as intelligent as a human, and Page is believed to have led the acquisition of DeepMind himself.

Nelson Mandela Taught Us the True Meaning of Social Entrepreneurship | Infinite Playground on a Finite Planet | Scoop.it
I hope Mr. Mandela knew how many social entrepreneurs, even potentially in children, he influenced by championing peace, forgiveness and racial unity for not just South Africa, but the world.
Jurjen Söhne's insight:

Social entrepreneurship is about applying practical and sustainable approaches to benefit society in general, especially the poor and marginalized.

Social entrepreneurs are "heroic troublemakers;" they disrupt the status quo and transform society, promoting systemic social change.

Social entrepreneurs have huge hearts, dreams, solutions and seek big change.

The single most defining characteristic of the social entrepreneur is "perseverance against an array of obstacles."Changing the world is about making the choice to keep going, to keep pushing, to keep running.

Predictive intelligence: A new breed of personal-assistant software

Predictive intelligence: A new breed of personal-assistant software | Infinite Playground on a Finite Planet | Scoop.it
THE idea of artificially intelligent personal assistants—digital secretaries, made of software, that take dictation, manage contacts, book lunches and arrange...
Jurjen Söhne's insight:

The next generation of assistant software aims to go one step further by pursuing an approach known as “predictive intelligence”. It exploits the fact that smartphones now have access to fast internet links and location data, and can draw upon personal information, address books, e-mail and calendars.

The aim of these new assistants is to anticipate what information users need, based on context and past behaviour, and to provide it before they have even asked for it.

Google Now service is arguably the most advanced incarnation of predictive intelligence; installed in many millions of Android devices.

In recent years Google has improved its search engine through semantic analysis and, more recently, personalisation. Anticipating your need to search is a logical next step.

But innovators must tread carefully. For one thing, predictive intelligence can be creepy. Some people may not like the idea that their phone is tracking what they are doing so closely.

UrtheCast - First Light "Democratizing a very powerful perspective on the planet"

UrtheCast - First Light "Democratizing a very powerful perspective on the planet" | Infinite Playground on a Finite Planet | Scoop.it
UrtheCast is putting high definition cameras on the International Space Station and streaming footage directly to the web.
Jurjen Söhne's insight:
Hello, world. It’s here: UrtheCast’s first release of Earth imagery, from space.

This is one of the moments that we’ve been waiting for — the release of these two images marks only the first of millions. Soon, we’ll bring you a virtually endless stream of unprecedented Earth imagery, captured from the International Space Station (ISS).

Captured on March 28, 2014, at 1pm GMT by our medium-resolution camera, Theia, the scrolling image above is centered around the city of Moneague, Jamaica.

At approximately 3200 x 8000 pixels, the photo covers about 300 square kilometers of terrain and gives us a remarkable glimpse at what’s to come from this powerful perspective on planet Earth.

In our second image, you’ll see an impressive 3000 x 5000 pixel view of the urban area surrounding Santa Cruz de Mara, Venezuela. Covering approximately 260 square kilometres, this image was also captured by Theia on March 28, 2014.

Coming soon:Earth in Ultra HD

Watch in Ultra HD as the Earth evolves before your eyes, day to day, month to month and year to year. Not only will you be able to zoom, rewind and explore buzzing urban zones, you’ll be able to explore areas of the globe yet to be touched by humans — where no woman or man has gone before.

From the snow tipped peaks of the Rocky Mountains, to the boats that glide down the Hudson toward Lady Liberty, UrtheCast will soon broadcast near realtime footage, in Ultra HD, from across the globe.

Second Life Founder, Philip Rosedale, Is Quietly Creating a Next-Generation Virtual World

Second Life Founder, Philip Rosedale, Is Quietly Creating a Next-Generation Virtual World | Infinite Playground on a Finite Planet | Scoop.it
In Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, humanity escapes a gritty dystopia by donning VR goggles and entering a virtual world called OASIS. Back here in a comparatively rosy 2013, we don’t have a fully immersive virtual experience—yet.
Jurjen Söhne's insight:

"Create a virtual place with the kind of richness and communication and interaction that we find in the real world, and then get us all in there!”

This isn’t Rosedale’s first dance. Second Life, his first virtual world, hosts a million users and a $6 billion economy. But Second Life never caught on in the massive way some thought it would.

He wants to make avatar interaction a richer experience. Our virtual selves should precisely mimic our movements in the real world in as close to real time as possible. Body language is a key element of satisfying real world interactions. Until we have realistic body language in the virtual world, folks won’t be drawn there.

While body tracking may make for more realistic and intuitive avatars, High Fidelity’s other big idea will power the world they live in. In exchange for virtual money, virtual citizens will assign their computer’s unused processing power—when they’re sleeping, for example—to construct High Fidelity’s world in exquisite detail.
