How I Became The Most Followed Nobody In Finland via @JaanaNystrom

How I Became The Most Followed Nobody In Finland via @JaanaNystrom | digital marketing strategy | Scoop.it

@Jaana Nyström is a great curator and she just beat me to the punch :). When she shared her EPIC journey of using G+ to move from "nobody" to "somebody" I planned to blog about her amazing journey. The content and message was too good to be trapped in comments.

Read this post CAREFULLY as you may recognize where you are on Jaana's timeline of personal brand development. There are several "inside baseball" tips to pay particular attention to including:

* Don't worry about perfection, start publishing.
* G+ is an AMAZING and vastly under used tool (start there add more social nets later).
* No matter what, keep turning the crank (keep going) since the only sin you and your personal band can't recover from is NOT PLAYING.

Great stuff from an amazing curator. What lessons did you learn from Jaana Nystrom? What similar lessons have you learned as you create a meaningful personal brand?

Is This Social Media For Me?

Is This Social Media For Me? | digital marketing strategy | Scoop.it

Most Important Social Media
Friend asked a great question but in the wrong way. Social Media isn't important to me in and of itself, but each social media channel can help communicate marketing messages and thus become valuable and important.

Key is "matching the hatch" to borrow a fly fishing term.

Matching the hatch puts the right kind of content, what Gary Vaynerchuk calls "native content', on each social net when THAT information is important to communicating a marketing message. Here is how I answered:

Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish.

If I want comments and discussion GPlus.
If I want feedback from friends Facebook.
If I want to generally test Scoop.it.
If I want a "set it and forget it" content solution Paper.li.
If I have something happening now or want to newsjack Twitter.
To raise money on creative or gaming projects Kickstarter.
If I want to share videos YouTube.

If I want to serialize stories Storify.
If I want to test an infographic Pinterest.
If I want to do something with audio then SmartCloud.
If I want to create sustainable and potentially "evergreen" content then I use WP blogs. Content becomes "evergreen" based on how it performs (views, shares, conversions).
If I want to sell something ecom then Shopify.

Match the hatch to get the most from your content, your growing social media tribe, your time and content marketing and curation efforts.

This is a question that I have wondered about. While this graphic gives an abbreviated, visual response to the question, it provides key insights into the issue.

The image cleverly illustrates the signs of narcissism before depicting the negative effects of social media, which include ADHD, depression and narcissistic personality disorder and addiction, among others.

It would be interesting to know the reasons WHY "People who use Facebook the most tend to have more narcissistic or insecure personalities" and why "those who [score] higher in narcissism also posted more often on twitter". While this post points out yet another important issue surrounding social media that cannot be ignored by business professionals and users alike, it does not provide enough information for the reasoning behind its statements.

Social Media Anxiety...Get Over It

Social Media Anxiety...Get Over It | digital marketing strategy | Scoop.it

Social Media Anxiety
Got to love social media. First social media has to prove it matters and isn't just a game then people worry about "doing it wrong". Yes there are "wrong" ways to create social media content...remember when we all started sharing exactly what was happening in the moment? Don't do that anymore.

Next we had the quote stage and now we seem to be getting the idea of how to surf social media. Some still have anxiety about jumping in or doing the wrong thing.

The half-life a tweet is hours. Remember you are in an ocean of content, so surf don't try to hold, compress or rule it. Here is another anti-anxiety pill for SMM. Look around, I've yet to follow or RT someone so brilliant I shouldn't be allowed in the same social space (lol). Yes they are out there, but I may never find them :).

Social media is the great level. What you can SEE and FEEL fast is we all have the same obsessions, fears, strengths, weaknesses, doubts and frustrations. Social shows our humanity in all its glory and aspirations.

Here is the other issue. If you are an Internet marketer, and who isn't these days, then social media anxiety can HURT. Don't let your "Sistine Chapel" perfectionism stop you from making social media mud pies. M

Social Media Referral Traffic +42%, $ Jumps + 63% and SMBs Rule [infographic]

Social Media Referral Traffic +42%, $ Jumps + 63% and SMBs Rule [infographic] | digital marketing strategy | Scoop.it
In 2013, both large and small retailers earned business by making social media a priority. But it was the small merchants, operating exclusively online, that dominated the top ranks of the social media 500. This infographic takes a closer look at how SMBs can harness the power of smart placement, great content and nimble response.

Marty Note
I Loved this Line
"According to an Internet Retailer study, monthly referral traffic to e-commerce websites from Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, and YouTube increased 42 percent, while the revenue generated from those visitors jumped nealry 63 percent."

There has been a debate about social media and SEO. Google continues to insist SMM has no role in ranking. This is disingenuous because it isolates Google from its parts.

Social media, as this infographic shows conclusively, helps with important Internet concepts like traffic, revenue and loyalty. Those are the "parts" that Google's continued claims that SMM doesn't impact rankings discounts.

Everything impacts rankings. Everything that brings traffic to or back to a website impacts SEO rankings. It has to since that is the nature of the game we play.

Coca-Cola's Bottle is Half Full [cool Infographic & forgotten SMM] | digital marketing strategy | Scoop.it
With rising unit volume sales in emerging markets, Coca-Cola’s third quarter earnings were in line with analysts’ estimates, despite the decline in net revenues as a result of currency fluctuations

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, December 31, 2013 6:12 AM

Loved this extensive analysis of some very positive Coca-Cola results. Well said here:

"Coca-Cola did not give any guidance for the next quarter, and said that its overall strategy to grow in emerging markets while embracing the shift to healthier beverages remains unchanged.

The company also mentioned that it has repurchased almost $2.8 billion worth of stock so far in 2013, and will buyback a further half a billion dollars’ worth of shares by the end of the year. Share repurchases in 2013 represent almost 2% of the company’s market cap."

###

Any company that buys its stock back, increases unit sales, has a well articulated and better-executed strategy is one to follow. What this analysis left out is how GREAT Coke is getting at Social Media.

Coca Cola's consistent social creativity is re-contextualizing an "old line" brand. Steve Jobs was dismissive of "sugar water" when he hired Scully away from Pepsi.

Social media provides ways to create new conversations about old brands. "New conversations" keep brands alive and relevant. In fact, of the two, Apple vs. Coca Cola, my social marketing innovation vote would go to sugared water ;)M.

Beyond The Stats
This is a great Blogging For Brands Infographic, but there is more to why brands must blog than stats. We live in a connected age when anyone can get to know anything.

Blogs create a sense of VOICE. They have a tone and a rhythm that communicates mountains of information about what a brand is really about. Blogs help supply the brand advocates any company depends on with social ammunition and fodder for their own blogs.

Blogs also react to what is happening NOW. If there is a national story an active blog is a great place to share your take. If there is a ripple in your brand's fabric a blog is a great place to iron out the wrinkle.

This is not to say that blogs are defensive. Blogs imply a promise - we will share on a regular basis and you (our brand advocates) can comment, participate and inform our efforts. Blogs say you are in this WITH US (visitors and brand advocates).

The collaborative idea of a blog can help a brand match its walk and talk, create a distinct tone and become a hub for all social marketing. Blogs are a must for brands and for many more reasons that captured in this excellent infographic.
