Why Google search's overhaul will matter to businesses

Why Google search's overhaul will matter to businesses | Digital Marketing Power | Scoop.it

This week the engineers behind Google search, arguably the world’s most popular internet service, announced that the engine is to undergo its most radical makeover to date. The overhaul will be gradually rolled out over the next few months, but its effects could be transformational, both for users and businesses. Google is now going to start fusing semantic search technology with its classic keyword search system. In easy speak, this means that whenever users enter a certain type of query, Google will try to supply a single answer, rather than just spit out thousands of blue web links.

This step change really is the Holy Grail.

SEO Like It’s 1989

SEO Like It’s 1989 | Digital Marketing Power | Scoop.it

Rembember the days of meta tag domination – when all you had to do to get a first page ranking in search engines was to have a few keywords in your meta tags? Those days are over. Search engine marketing has morphed into a complex beast consisting of domain authority, page rank, follow/no-follow, and social cues, just to name a few.

With all the complexities that have appeared in search engine optimization over the last 10 years, many people have shifted towards strategies of trying to influence the search engines by getting thousands of crappy links pointing to their sites using unnatural and automated methods. That was effective in the last several years but now that Google is getting smarter and penalizing for trying to game the system, using “black-hat” SEO techniques can actually hurt your rankings.

SEO and Popularity

SEO and Popularity | Digital Marketing Power | Scoop.it
It’s true that Google wants the most relevant and quality results at the top of their SERPs, but we can’t overlook the fact that they also want popularity. This might not seem fair, but in the way of SEO there are really two ways to look at the dilemma. Read on..

There is a continuing disconnect with people’s personal use of the internet and how they then apply digital marketing to promote their business.

Forget SEO And Think Local

Forget SEO And Think Local | Digital Marketing Power | Scoop.it

I know the headline is a bit contradictory. Local search is still considered SEO by those near and dear to our hearts.

Maybe for you targeting people all over the world makes sense. I’m certainly not saying to forget it completely, but I read a lot blogs semi-regularly and you might be pretty well served if you started catering to your local audiences with a more grassroots marketing campaign.

Ranking First Isn’t Enough to Get New Business

Ranking First Isn’t Enough to Get New Business | Digital Marketing Power | Scoop.it

Yes, I realize the irony of an SEO firm telling you that ranking first in Google and Bing isn’t going to make a difference for your business.
