Why Indiscriminate Link Building Can Get You Into Google Penalty Trouble Easily

Why Indiscriminate Link Building Can Get You Into Google Penalty Trouble Easily | Digital Marketing Land | Scoop.it
How do you get links in a post-penguin world? For far too many the answer seems to be, exclusively, guest posting. Today I’m going to give you four reasons why I think this tactic can be as dangerous as those it replaced.

Google is getting smarter every day, and it makes little to no sense at all to keep going after links like it was 2005.

In this very interesting article by James Finlayson on SEOMoz, you can get a good idea of how Google thinks and looks at your inbound linking profile when looking at your site.

Better understanding link quality, type, position and authorship can help you a great deal in saving yourself not only lots of time and money, but also the risk of having a site that is penalized.

The best strategy of all in my opinion is to build oustanding, uniquely useful content, ike no one else in your niche does.

Informative. Insightful. Very useful. 8/10

I need to get a LOT better at writing titles that draw people in! It's an important element - but at the same time, the smart, funny titles that are more like headlines, don't do as well for SEO organic results imho

I would believe that quality rules over quantity.

Anthony Hall's curator insight, February 19, 2013 7:34 PM

With all of the buzz going on about Social Media, I am finding that people are shying away from SEO and Search Engine Marketing.  However, the truth is that it is still very viable and should not be discarded from your marketing bag of tricks.

As a matter of fact, SEO and Social Media blend very nicely together as one feeds into the other.

Now, you don't have to be a super SEO guru to get the benefits from it.  Learning how to identify high traffic keywords in your niche that you can optimize your content with is easier than you might think.

Then, by following some simple guidelines for how to structure and optimize your content, you will find that the bulk of the work is practically en-grained in the process of creating the content in the first place; once you get the hang of it.

Then, simply by sharing your content across your social networks, you can build a web of related information which will, by the nature of the internet, boost your website rankings which will cause a website to gain even more traffic.

There are plenty of places online you can learn the simple side of SEO for free.  Be sure you make some time to either learn it yourself or invest some money in having someone handle it for you.

Luke Hancock - H&H Social Design's curator insight, April 17, 2013 4:43 PM

Glad Adrian emphasized quality of content over quantity. Great infographic.

Dotty Scott's curator insight, March 28, 2013 5:15 PM

I think there is way more value in a Google+ account than mentioned here.  I have seen some VERY POOR websites rank well with the help of a Google+ account.

Vinod Poyilath's curator insight, March 29, 2013 10:44 AM

Interesting stats there... Google+ being more popular in the BRIC countries.. means HUGE potential, and obviously for Indian entrepreneurs, another great tool to leverage. Interestingly, I don't see that being done enough!!

And looking at where it is going, the first page results are increasingly getting hijacked by Google local listings, which is both good and bad; good that your results for local searches come with maps and all contact info in one glance, and you can rank on front page with literally no SEO; bad that it becomes hard for a site with no brick and mortar office to rank for such local search terms.

Nick Mortel's comment, April 7, 2013 4:47 AM
