Creating A Successful Startup
Creating a startup can be solipsistic. Startups are passionate and creative. Feedback loops can be hard to pipe into what can be a sealed ecosystem. Sealed ecosystems cost money.

Better to go early and ugly with EVERYTHING starting with keyword research. One of the benefits of keyword research is well described here - ALIGNMENT.

Startups must align their passion and language to customers. When startups try to crate NEW language they fail. The key is slipping THE NEW inside of a comfortable shoe that customers know and trust.

Made To Stick, the excellent book by the Heath brothers, explains how to present The New from inside of The Old. Trusted ideas, even when wrong, bring the value of the trust they created. If a startup NEWNESS obliterates a trusted idea it may be seen as so disruptive that trust can't form.

Better to couch The New as an understandable IMPROVEMENT upon The Old since doing so allows TRUST to transfer. Many startups REJECT such a "downgrade" of their ideas and so many startups FAIL.

Passion is important and valuable, but so is listening and learning. As a content marketer I've discovered that when ideas are TOO NEW they fail (i.e. don't get viral pickup or link support). Most people want to understand and trust something before they believe and so are willing to advocate.

Understanding and trusting comes from several things including:

* Simplicity (why OLD understood ideas help explain The New).

* Who else trusts and understands.

* How much NEWNESS I'm being asked to swallow.

* What is the BENEFIT (to me the potential customer) of understanding?

The last bullet should probably be first on the list since the old, "What's in it for ME" question is paramount. If benefit isn't an immediate hook chances for further engagement are diminished.

Keyword research helps form NEW ideas with trusted language, existing traffic patterns and so allows The New to survive while new keyword patterns become established, new patterns our successful startup helped create.

Daniel Imbellino's comment, June 17, 2013 7:45 PM
The value of organic search is incredible. While social media is super important when it comes to connecting with people, sharing content, etc,
I just couldn't make it without that traffic from Google search itself. At times I do get a boost of traffic from social media, but its only for a short time. that being said, we should
never rely on social networks to fuel our traffic.

The Influence of Blogs on Purchase Decisions

The Influence of Blogs on Purchase Decisions | Digital Marketing Kenya | Scoop.it
The power of blogs in influencing consumer purchase decisions is stronger than you might realize. According to data from a research study conducted by Research Now, nearly nine in 10 consumers (84%) make purchases after reading about a product or service on a blog. Among consumers between the ages of 18-34, blogs ranked as the most important source of information to make buying decisions. Among consumers between the ages of 35-54, blogs ranked as the second most important source behind friends, family, and colleagues. Even older consumers (55 and older) value blogs when making purchase decisions ranking them third in terms of importance behind friends, family, and colleagues and editorial articles.

For brands, this data is critical. The research found that blogs influence household purchase decisions for 54% of the survey respondents, gifts that consumers are buying for themselves (45%), and gifts they’re buying for other people (30%). In fact, 25% of respondents indicated that they buy something each month based on blog content!

Consumers are turning to blogs for specific reasons as they travel through the path to making a purchase. Nearly one in two (46%) use blogs for initial product investigation, and 43% use blogs for inspiration. One in three consumers (33%) use blogs to narrow down their purchase options while 30% use blogs to confirm their purchase choices. In other words, blogs play a role at every stop along the marketing and sales funnel....

Wake up health care: Patients Google it

Wake up health care: Patients Google it | Digital Marketing Kenya | Scoop.it

Check out the video that was made. The narrator states:

I have a deadly disease and I am going to die in 6 weeks. Or at least that’s what I thought when I used Google to diagnose my twitching eyelid. I’m not the only one. Instead of consulting a doctor, 75% of the population uses Google to diagnose their systems, and on the internet, anyone can be a doctor. Most cures you’ll find online only makes things worse. The Flemish government commissioned us to prevent people from making this mistake.

The company, DDB Brussels conducted a Google Adwords campaign of the top 100 most searched symptoms, and when the person put the symptoms in, this would pop up:

The narrator continues:

The sponsored link leads you to a government website, where reliable and professional information can be found. On the page we included an awareness video showing what could possibly happen when you consult a Dr. Google.

Oh no, this can happen when you Google it.

And he ends with the advice: “So remember kids, don’t Google it!”

Susannah so thoughtfully posed the question:

This ad campaign was directed at Belgians, not Americans, but the issues raised are universal, which leads us to these three realities about Dr. Google:

1. Google is the first place doctors go to for medical information.  Talk to any doctor you know, and who do they first consult? Google. Ok so doctors usually have some form of expertise for which they need no consult, but for any rarer cases of disease, lingering questions about symptoms, or medication doses, honestly Google is the easiest place to go. And don’t forget that article from the Atlantic, which revealed this ugly truth:“Wikipedia is the top source of health care information for both doctors and patients. Fifty percent of physicians use Wikipedia for information, especially for specific conditions.”

So let’s just be realistic, even if you decide to go to a doctor first, you are still consulting Dr. Google by default. I am not advocating that patients bypass the medical system altogether, but we have to recognize that all knowledge, even medical knowledge, is becoming more, networked, collective, and real-time. This article in the Atlantic describes it to a T:

We are in a new age of “networked knowledge,” meaning that knowledge — ideas, information, wisdom even — has broken out of its physical confines (the pages of a book or the mind of a person) and now exists in a hyperconnected online state.

The bottom line is that you often won’t find the answer in that dusty medical textbook published 4 years ago, and the network may actually protect us from the mistakes of any lone doctor.

2. The poor design of the health care system leads the sser to Google.

Drawing by @JessicaHagy based on a TRANSFORM keynote.

This drawing by @JessicaHagy, really captures it in a powerful and succint way. People need more in depth health information, and the 2 page black and white paper handouts we provide to meet meaningful use criteria aren’t sufficient.

3. Google is the gateway to communities of expert patients on social media sites. One-third of U.S. adults have ever gone online to try to figure out a medical condition they are dealing with – diagnosis, and 59 percent of U.S. adults say they went online in the past year to gather health information. And, they are finding that information on social media. (Gasp!) Yes, social media! That dirty word in the medical establishment. Health care professionals groan about the loads of “bad” medical information and wasted time in the clinical encounter with patients who have too many Internet questions.

But it’s the place where patients are making diagnoses, creating effective health education materials, and finding the peer support that is critical for their survival. Let’s be honest, who is more expert at a disease than the person who’s living with it? Have you heard about the Nightscout Project, a DIY open-source project? It’s the most disruptive and transformative technology to hit the diabetes community in the last decade, and it couldn’t have happened without social media.

Health care, wake up. It’s not the 1990s anymore.

Social media, Google, and the Internet are medical therapy.

My recommendation: Do Google it.

Step Up Your Link Strategy to Get Better Search Results #Infographic | Digital Marketing Kenya | Scoop.it
Great SEO can make a company, bad SEO can kill a company. For consumers, links are a way to learn more information about a subject, but to search engines they can serve as an indication of content that’s popular. If multiple pages link to the same article or news item, search algorithms assume it must be of value and rank it higher. External links are a major factor in how Google determines search results, according to separate reports from Moz and Searchmetrics.

8 Steps to a Solid Social Media Strategy | Digital Marketing Kenya | Scoop.it

In thinking about social media marketing, you have to remove your corporate cap and instead think like a fun party guest, focusing on how you can develop relevant, interesting, enjoyable, and ultimately share-worthy content. From there, a following and uptick in sales are only natural.

What do great party guests have? First of all, they look sharp and presentable. That’s where a good social media page design comes in handy. You don’t want your looks to deter potential fans. Secondly, they are polite and warm. You want your social media messages to have a positive, engaging tone. Thirdly, they illuminate a room with sparkling conversation. They bring a dish to pass or a gift for the host. You can achieve these objectives by crafting thoughtful blog content to share and offering special deals for your social media audience....

Kayla Childress's curator insight, November 23, 11:51 PM

This article discusses in detail the predictions of social media in 2015 and which platforms will be most successful in comparison to others, and which will grow. The first platform discussed is Ello. "Their website states: “Collecting and selling your personal data, reading your posts to your friends, and mapping your social connections for profit is both creepy and unethical. Under the guise of offering a “free” service, users pay a high price in intrusive advertising and lack of privacy.” The next point discussed was Facebook ad and pricing demand will increase. Thirdly, Twitter's new business advertising will sky rocket in popularity. Google+ will fade into obscurity. Instagram will become essential for those companies that base a lot of their marketing off of image based social media. Sixth, LinkedIn will widen it's gap as the B2B platform. And finally, social media will become a core necessity for online marketing. I would have to agree with a majority of the points made throughout the article besides Ello becoming more popular. As it approaches the end of 2014 people are still incredibly active on Facebook; I think Ello may take a little longer to evolve into a heavier platform that is used amoungst the general public and companies trying to marketing there products and services.

Stephen Daniels's curator insight, November 24, 10:38 AM

2014 has brought about some new trends in terms of how business are using social media and I expect even more new trends to emerge in 2015. One of these expected trends is the rise of Ello, expected to go head to head with Facebook. Ello offers a social media experience much like Facebook, but offers a promise of an ad free experience. I think that this is a great feature that will bring a lot a Facebook users to the platform. It will be interesting to see if the platform can allow users to create the same engaging content as Facebook and other social media sites without incorporating advertisements. I think that if they can achieve this it has the chance to take over the social media giant Facebook.

Shaquille Portee's curator insight, November 24, 10:59 AM

I found this article to be insightful. Forbes breaks down what to expect in the upcoming year as far as trends in social media marketing goes. For instance, companies that advertise on Facebook are expected to see an increase in pricing. They also predict that the google plus platform will "fade into obscurity", which is no surprise. With 200 million users monthly instagram will become essential for image based social media marketing.
