What Facebook Can Teach You About Staying Relevant

What Facebook Can Teach You About Staying Relevant | Digital Marketing & Communications | Scoop.it

Facebook has always been criticized for bringing about too many changes – privacy, look and feel, new features or otherwise. As humans, it’s a natural tendency that we oppose change. However, as we’ve often realized in our personal and professional lives, change may be difficult but in a lot of cases, it’s always for the better.

Facebook is a great example of how to innovate and bring about changes which make users life easier. Whether it’s the smart friend lists, the subscribe button or the simplified privacy policy, Facebook is a great ambassador of the ‘change is good’ principle.

Key Lessons and Thoughts from Future of Web Apps 2011

Key Lessons and Thoughts from Future of Web Apps 2011 | Digital Marketing & Communications | Scoop.it
TI hope some of you followed the Future of Web Apps conference and learned a lot. I’ve been here in London for it for the past two days, and have learned insane amounts. FoWA definitely isn’t on the same scale as conferences such as LeWeb or many in the United States, but it offers its own benefits over a lot of other tech conferences.

If you’re a developer or designer, then FoWA is probably the conference you want to be at. It offered a huge amount of technical information and opportunities that other conferences just don’t offer. Having two “streams” meant that you could choose whether you’d rather watch more business/marketing focussed talks or more technical talks – I’m sorry to those of you who would rather have read about technical talks, as I attended the business-focussed ones.

In this post I hope to summarise some of the key things I learned.

The Risks of Over-Gamification in Social Media Marketing | Social Media Today

The Risks of Over-Gamification in Social Media Marketing | Social Media Today | Digital Marketing & Communications | Scoop.it
There is always a very clear need for us to understand the context within which the game occurs and what it’s trying to teach us and the risk is that when this is mishandled (or not communicated sufficiently clearly) what is intended to be a great way to learn something fast is lost and we end up focusing on the game itself. In the real world this means that a training session is wasted as the values learnt in the game are not translated to actions outside it. On the web it becomes even more meaningless as websites, for instance, show their PageRank value like it should mean something. And, very recently, job candidates proudly displayed their Klout score on resumes meant to impress potential employers.

Marketers, Facebook Is Not About You | Social Media Today

Marketers, Facebook Is Not About You | Social Media Today | Digital Marketing & Communications | Scoop.it
Facebook’s f8 event last week will have lasting ramifications for the network’s 800 million users. It will also have implications for brands, but the biggest takeaway should that if you’re a marketer, Facebook was never about you, it’s not about you, and it will never be about you. I’m sorry to the handful of laptops and iPhones that were just hurled across the room, but the truth hurts.

Facebook doesn’t want you to “dislike” things

Facebook doesn’t want you to “dislike” things | Digital Marketing & Communications | Scoop.it
Facebook has perhaps become best known for its “Like” button. You can like news stories, videos, and whatever else your friends decide to post in the newsfeed.

With f8′s announcement of Open Graph (Want to know everything that happened at Facebook’s f8 this year? Here you go.), one of the most exciting things announced was that developers can now make up their own verbs and actions people can take on content. Something like “Watch”, “Listen”, and “Read” will surely be seen on buttons in apps everywhere.

All Facebook points out that the one thing Facebook doesn’t want you to ever do is “dislike” something.
