Marketers Undervalue Email, Overvalue Personalization

Marketers Undervalue Email, Overvalue Personalization | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Email Marketing - Gaps exist in digital marketers’ perceptions of how consumers want to engage with brands, what influences their purchase decisions, and how they view privacy, according to a recent report ...
Ben Eatwell's insight:

I was a massive believer in a personalised message - and still am in terms of giving customers what they actually want. But this reminds me of an article I read recently looking, stating how people distrust blurb and prefer facts.

This seems obvious but has powerful implications for copywriting. Think of the rise of infographics which pretty much was a reaction to the rise in data and the need to simplify it to the extent where we can take meaningful insight (well thats the idea anyway).

Does copywriting need to reduce the emphasis on persionalised messages and take a far harder, almost feature/benefit style approach - more infographic that persuasive text.

The two stats in the piece that popped to me:

1. 63% said personalization is now so common that they have grown numb to it

2. Consumers do appreciate customized product recommendations

would suggest we need to dom something different to keep our marketing interesting and therefore effective.

3 Ways to Use Multi-Channel Analytics Reporting in Marketing

3 Ways to Use Multi-Channel Analytics Reporting in Marketing | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Multi-channel reporting and multi-touch attribution offer businesses deep insight into the customer journey to conversion and smarter business decisions.
Ben Eatwell's insight:

The takeaway I really like is that from #1: that we should consider conversion ina  more holistic sense than just a purchase. By thinking about where the customer lies in their purchasing/discovery journey we can tailor our content and message to move them to the nesxt best action. This is especially relevant for longer sales cycles and b2b. But also to markets where there is high competition/ease of comparison. If we acept that the technology that enables all these touchpoints also offers easy quick access to competitors and embrace that - then by tailoring content/message we can ensure winning out over any comparison - an old article from ConversionXL makes this point clear when he talks about how un-logical people are when making decisions on price: http://conversionxl.com/pricing-experiments-you-might-not-know-but-can-learn-from/

Talking about content to support purchasing decisions - I found these stats (sorry they are old and for b2b only) but in 2010 prospects consumed 5.3 pieces of content before a purchase. In 2011 this jumped to 10.4 pieces of content...

The new digital customer journey: Cross-channel, mobile, social, self-service, and engaged | ZDNet

The new digital customer journey: Cross-channel, mobile, social, self-service, and engaged | ZDNet | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
The sheer proliferation of new online devices and digital consumer channels is pushing leading-edge companies to rethink how they connect with and engage their customers.
Ben Eatwell's insight:

It's the second part of this piece that really rings true. The fact is engagement and creating a 2 way dialogue has to be a top priority for any brand, B2C or B2B. But as Dion writes, first you have to understand how you can add value and that means understanding the customer journey.

Then the real gem - you must first define the objectives, finding a needle in a haystack, no matter how hard is a lot easier if you know you're searching for a needle! Using a customer journey to understand their pain points and then try to make their life simplier - either with useful content or a new/redesigned product is a great way to build trust and advocates.

Why Is Facebook Blue? The Science Behind Colors In Marketing

Why Is Facebook Blue? The Science Behind Colors In Marketing | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
Turns out something as simple as tweaking the color of a button changes user behavior or endears people to your product. Buffer's Leo Widrich explains...
Ben Eatwell's insight:

Fantastic article with real evidence on how colour impacts decision making and how this can be used for web and brand design.

From other areas of scisnce we know how effective colour can be at altering expectations - one intersting study had wine aficionados taste white wine with food colouring to make it red adn then asked to describe the wine and guess the variety - none of them picked up on the fact it was an imposter and used terms normally used to describe reds.

We even use colour as a perceptual clue - scenes that have a "bluey" hue  are attributed to things in the distance.

In the end colour is created in the brain from the compairson of the infomration frmo the cones in your eye - it is no surprise then as we start to learn what colours are and their associations in childhood these will have an impact on our cognitive processes and decisions in adulthood.

Eight Silly Data Things Marketing People Believe That Get Them Fired.

Eight Silly Data Things Marketing People Believe That Get Them Fired. | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
From obsessing about real-time data to buying advertising based on ad impressions/page views to celebrating Likes, learn how to avoid eight common mistakes.
Ben Eatwell's insight:

The yoda of analytics asses the 8 most common data mistakes marketers make. The one that really stood out to me was teh first - Not real time data but right time data. It's such an important distinction as anynoe with any knowledge about statistics knows data is only the first step, it's the analysis and interpretation of that data (which may not always be obvious and easily extrapolated). This can take time and require various sources for corroboration and with so much information flying in create knee jerk reactions that can lead you down the wrong path.

It's just like any science project - create your hypothesis (read objectives) run the experiment (create and collect the data) do statistical analysis to understand if it's significant (science is easier this way as you are trying to measure specific 'things' and remove extraneous influence, real life isn't so simple) then make your conclusion (read, taking into account your objectives and strategies implemented what the data say about the effectiveness of your strategies to achieving your goal?)
