How digital is changing strategy

How digital is changing strategy | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Digitization is challenging, undermining, and disrupting how businesses operate. Yet while most companies understand the significance of the pace and scale of these changes, few leaders have determined exactly how their organization’s strategy needs to change in response. In this interview McKinsey Digital strategy leader Jay Scanlan discusses what’s changing, the choices companies face, and how boards and CEOs should react.

MIT Turns Hacking Medicine Program Into an Institute to Study Digital Health | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Medical devices and information technologies have flooded the airwaves with health-related data, but the underlying question of whether the onslaught of digital-health products has made people healthier remains. Now the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is aiming to help answer that question.Billions of dollars were spent last year on digital-health products, and billions more were invested in startup companies making wearable sensors, big-data platforms, analytics, fitness trackers, apps and telemedicine programs that seemed out of reach 20 years ago.

Top mHealth apps as rated by doctors

Top mHealth apps as rated by doctors | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it
HealthTap published a survey of the top physician-rated apps for both iOS and Android, and breaks it down into 30 separate categories.

HealthTap founder and CEO Ron Gutman said the company's goal is to give clinicians and consumers a guide to choosing apps that have been approved by doctors, rather than resorting to the user ratings found in app stores (HealthTap's AppRx app, by the way, has a healthy 4.72 star rating in the Apple App Store, he said). The apps are judged on three standards – ease of use, effectiveness and medical accuracy, validity and soundness. They're not given a number rating, but are ranked solely based on how many doctors would recommend them.

Top 10 Health and Medical Apps for Android

1. Weight Watchers Mobile (Weight Watchers International)

2. White Noise Lite (TMSoft)

3. Lose It! (FitNow)

7. Instant Heart Rate (Azumio)

8. Fooducate – Healthy Food Diet (Fooducate)

Pharma's getting savvier about social, with Boehringer, Bayer leading the pack

Pharma's getting savvier about social, with Boehringer, Bayer leading the pack | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Bigger isn't necessarily better when it comes to social media. But bigger is certainly better than drugmakers were doing a couple of years ago. Some companies are actually getting it right now, Ogilvy Healthworld says.

A small group of drugmakers are "connecting the dots," according to Ogilvy's latest audit of pharma's social media efforts. They're getting patients, doctors and the media interested, delivering relevant info, inspiring actual conversations.

A very small group, actually. Just 5 companies out of 14 that Ogilvy investigated. We'll get to those later. First, let's consider the fact that pharma's social media presence has grown--a lot. Drugmakers have 1.3 million Facebook followers, Ogilvy says. The average number of pharma tweets per week has gone up by 530% since 2013. The number of Twitter followers has tripled, to 790,000. Four companies even have Vine accounts.

"We know that some pharma companies have been cautious in their approach to social media, but our report clearly demonstrates a dramatic and successful increase in activity," Rebecca Canvin, social media manager at Ogilvy Healthworld, said in a release.

Some have been more successful than others, of course. To go from size to success, Ogilvy looked at more stats--how many followers, how frequent the updates, how many social accounts, how often posts or tweets were shared. The auditors also gauged interest--how much did followers care about a company's social chatter?

Which company came out on top won't be a surprise to those who keep an eye on such things: Boehringer Ingelheim, already a leading presence in 2013, took that lead much further. The German drugmaker's score almost doubled that of its closest rival, Bayer. And Bayer, in turn, bested third-place Novartis ($NVS) by an easy margin.

The remaining two companies "connecting the dots" were Merck ($MRK) and Johnson & Johnson ($JNJ), both of which made big leaps from 2013. In fact, all of the top 5 multiplied their social presences significantly.

Four other drugmakers have made some strides and some connections since Ogilvy's last audit. The rest are still doing the social thing at a beginner level--broadcasting content without engaging much at all, the audit showed.

It's a good thing for them that Ogilvy analyzed their successful peers to come up with some tips for improvement. "[I]t's time to be brave, get personal, educate and integrate social media into their wider marketing strategy," Canvin said.

But why? As the current experts at Boehringer told Ogilvy, the conversation is already out there. "People are talking about you, whether you're active or not," said Patricia Alves, Boehringer's social media and community manager. "Social media gives you the opportunity to engage in that conversation, to give your position and your statement, and maybe then hopefully change the opinion of one person or two."

What is content curation?

In simple terms, the process of content curation is the act of sorting through large amounts of content on the web and presenting the best posts in a meaningful and organized way.

The process can include sifting, sorting, arranging, and placing found content into specific themes, and then publishing that information.

Mobile Health Adoption Growing Among Doctors, for Apps and Content

Mobile Health Adoption Growing Among Doctors, for Apps and Content | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

More than 80 percent of U.S. doctors surveyed use mobile apps or view professional content on mobile devices for work. That’s a significant increase over the numbers from around a year ago, according to a new survey.

The main reasons for adoption? Improved patient care and communication, and time efficiency, doctors say. The survey was conducted byMedData Group, a healthcare marketing company in Topsfield, MA, and involved polling 375 physicians around the country this month.

14 Major U.S. Hospitals Now Using HealthKit as Apple Adds Health Industry Advisors

14 Major U.S. Hospitals Now Using HealthKit as Apple Adds Health Industry Advisors | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Fourteen major U.S. hospitals have rolled out their own trials of Apple's HealthKit tool, with the pilot program earning praise among doctors for its ease of use and advanced tracking of various health metrics, reports Reuters.

According to the news agency, eight hospitals trying out HealthKit are on the U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll which ranks the best hospitals, with the program seeing more of a positive reaction versus health tracking programs by Google and Samsung.

Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans has been working with Apple and Epic Systems, Ochsner's medical records vendor, to roll out a pilot program for high-risk patients. The team is already tracking several hundred patients who are struggling to control their blood pressure. The devices measure blood pressure and other statistics and send it to Apple phones and tablets.

"If we had more data, like daily weights, we could give the patient a call before they need to be hospitalized," said Chief Clinical Transformation Officer Dr. Richard Milani.

Social Media, Search, and Consumers • Doctors Social Media

Social Media, Search, and Consumers • Doctors Social Media | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

The landscape of social media has quickly replaced the standard way we communicate and do business. Google, Yahoo, and Bing can help you find what you want, but Social Media is where you talk about what you’ve found. It’s clear to me that social media provides us with the tools necessary to reach out to a wider audience in real time, as well as find and communicate with family and friends.Social media has become an integral part of the fabric of our communication process.

SOCIAL TOOL

Social media has completely changed the way we communicate. Instead of writing letters or sending a postcard, we now attach a link, send a picture or send a instant message via Snapchat, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. We can notify family or friends of life challenges in a private message using for example Facebook Messenger. In fact, Social Media has proven to be a lifesaving tool. It has been used to alert loved ones and authorities of possible threats and danger, as well as providing invaluable insight into the personal desperation of some of its users.

MARKETING TOOL

Social Media is also an effective reputation management tool. It gives consumersthe ability to give real time reviews about quality, pricing, customer service, as well as the taste, look and feel of products and services. We now have the ability to share, be shared with or to like the latest and the greatest of products, services, music, videos, electronics, cell phones, pictures, etc.

RESEARCH TOOL

In business, it’s the best place to learn what products or services are meeting the needs of the wider consumer population in general as well as your target market in particular. Social Media can help you answer important marketing questions while gathering the research information needed to help make your business a success when optimizing important consumer information.

Challenges Up Ahead

The challenge I see up ahead for the likes of Google, Bing, and Yahoo searchengines, is that while they continue to make modifications to their algorithms. It begins to create uncertainty and chaos in the marketplace and often reduce the consistent return. Marketers rely on consistent, and reliable information.

Marketing agencies and marketers look to search engines like Google for guidance and insight. They use this information to realign their marketing plans, only to find that after six months, Google’s guidance has changed. We see this now with their upcoming algorithm update for mobile searches. At which point it becomes necessary to re-engineer the entire marketing plan mid stream to avoid revenue losses.

Additionally, by limiting potential consumers to a local search result, they reduce the visual exposure of other brands for consumers to get access too. Social Mediaprovides a more consistent outcome and more variety outside local search, because many of the individual connections are out of state, or country.

Change is coming

Google itself has a head wind of resistance from Apple, and others who may possibly move away from Google as its primary search option as well as for mobilesearch. The European Union has also zeroed in on Google, due to what it describes as a monopolistic dominance in search engine and how businesses seem to rise and fall based on search results. Not to mention the possibility that Amazon, which is the biggest provider of consumer goods online are very likely to create their ownsearch options for their millions of consumers.

In the big picture, these may seem like small losses, but the impact on Google will be a revenue drain. I expect that businesses will begin to transfer their dollars to a more consistent platform, which social media is now becoming.  The costly nature of paid search and the diminishing returns are making business owners take a second look at where they spend their marketing dollars.

Be ready to take advantage of the changes

Social Media continues to grow, expand, and drive consumer. Every day more and more businesses Get Social and Stay Connected! I encourage every business owner to take advantage of the opportunities that social media can provide for their goods or services. Recognize that this platform is more adept at meeting the needs of our mobile population and new business start ups.

How Social Media will additionally change the future is yet to be determined, so hold on to your hats and stay tuned for our next article about social media and your medical practice.

Google, Biogen will use wearable sensors to study multiple sclerosis | mobihealthnews

Google, Biogen will use wearable sensors to study multiple sclerosis | mobihealthnews | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

Biogen Idec has partnered with Google X, Google’s business unit for long-term “moonshot” projects, to study outside factors that might contribute to the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a report from Bloomberg.

Google and Biogen will use sensors, software, and data analysis tools to collect and analyze data from people who have MS. The companies aim to explore why MS progresses differently in each patient.

Bloomberg pointed out that Biogen has used digital tools for its disease research in the past. Last month, Biogen announced that it was using Fitbit activity trackers to gather data from people who have MS. It gave 250 Fitbit bands to participants to track their level of activity and sleep patterns. Last summer, the pharma company worked with Cleveland Clinic to develop an iPad app to assess MS progression.

Apple Watch already has 264 health apps, unused pulse ox functionality, and a hospital pilot

Apple Watch already has 264 health apps, unused pulse ox functionality, and a hospital pilot | Digital Marketing | Scoop.it

As the Apple Watch begins to find its way into the hands of consumers, it’s also becoming clearer that there’s a lot of interest in the health features of the device. On April 24th, the day the Apple Watch began shipping, MobiHealthNews found 264 Apple Watch apps related to health or fitness in the Apple AppStore, including apps from Humana, Cerner, the Mayo Clinic, athenahealth, and Walgreens, to name just a few.

Although a majority were fitness and workout apps, we found 13 apps related to medication adherence, 15 apps specifically for doctors or patients, 12 hydration tracking apps, and 13 apps for tracking fertility and/or pregnancy. And that was just on day one.

We’re also learning more about the sensors in the device. The big (and often misinterpreted) news about Apple Watch’s health features is that they were not what they could have been. The Wall Street Journal broke the story that Apple initially planned a much more ambitious health device, but concerns around accuracy and regulation stymied those plans.
