What do we mean when we say, “Transformative learning experiences powered by technology”?

What do we mean when we say, “Transformative learning experiences powered by technology”? | Digital Literacy | Scoop.it

A transformative learning experience fundamentally changes our understanding of what it means to learn and what it means to work together with others to learn.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, February 5, 11:15 AM

Technology is not a tool. Heidegger proposed it involves two intertwined definitions: human/anthropological and technological/instrumental. He proposed that technology is about a way of thinking, acting, and speaking about, with, and through the tools humans use. In that sense, the line about technology being transforming is accurate. When the two definitions are separated, that is not the case.

Wilko Dijkhuis's curator insight, February 6, 3:32 AM

Nice example of how a persons life and learning strategies became transformed by an experience at a young age (in this particular case it was an encounter with primitive computer technology, but in general it  could have been anything: e.g. hearing the saxophone played well for the first time, or "seeing" the mother of god in a cave)

Alas, also a typical example of unwarranted educational proselytizing. The man is so enthusiastic about his new insight that everybody has to hear the good news. Worse, everybody has to convert and repent. The idea that Catholicism, Jazz or technology enhanced project based learning  does not work for everybody, never enters the man's mind.

Lets stop with this kind of "inspirational" stories in educational design. Lets stick to science (mainly cognitive and social psychology). I know it is boring, but it is our best shot at finding out what works for whom under which circumstances.

How To Writing: App Smashing With A Publishing Menu - Zig Zag Tech | Digital Literacy | Scoop.it
After our collaborative How To writing project, everyone was quick to get started on their own “expert” stories. Making lists of things we’re experts at helps generate ideas, then the stories start to flow!

We’ve published our writing several different ways this year, so I offered an idea menu of apps to publish with to my class. This is by no means a comprehensive list of tools. I just wanted to provide them a jumping off point to get started when they were ready to publish. Please feel free to download the menu here.

38 Reasons Why Every Educator Needs an iPad Pro

38 Reasons Why Every Educator Needs an iPad Pro | Digital Literacy | Scoop.it
The Apple Keynote 2015 edition happened on 9/9/15 in the legendary Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Monster announcements were made across several of the Apple products. However, the unveiling of an all new iPad Pro got every spectator on the edge of their seats as one-after-another Apple demonstrated the glory of their tablet device. When it comes to devices for learning and teaching in classroom, I am a big fan of the iPad. The excellent quality display features, graphics, anywhere, anytime truly mobile learning solutions offered by this tablet with a lucid, highly responsive MultiTouch experience and App Store’s unlimited productivity, creativity and teaching-learning oriented solutions have made iPad an irresistible education technology tool for all educators.  When Apple released its first ever iPad it might not have the huge diversity and potential that this tablet device could offer. Tim Cook himself admitted to being amazed at the diverse ways in which people had used the iPad. He called it Apple’s vision for the future of personal computing.

Since its five years of inception, iPad has truly transformed the way we create, the way we learn, and the way we work. And the all new iPad Pro is all set to take the create-work-learn paradigm to an all new level.

The National Digital Skills Framework which we are building is not intended to be an overly formal document with huge levels of complexity, but rather a living document that adapts and evolves to suit all of our needs and which seeks to keep as up to date as possible with technologies and the related human skills. It is intended to be community-owned, building on the excellent work of others in the whole area of digital literacies, skills & training, and professional development.

Insightful critique and right on the mark when it comes to the constitutive role of technology with regard to the powers of the human mind (cf. Doug Engelbart, 1962). I would declare any educational setting or maker space, a 'space of possibilities' in which playfulness and creativity can be fostered through modeling.

Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool

Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool | Digital Literacy | Scoop.it

Book creator has probably been the app I have used most, in my teaching, with pupils and in my training. The blank canvas aspect means it can be used across the whole curriculum and the addition of the pen tool in the last few weeks has added to that.

We use Showbie at school for pupils to share their work, including books made with Book Creator from the iPads and home to the teachers for assessment. Recently, we have used both the Pen Tool and Record feature to give feedback on the pupils' eBooks. The pupils send their books using Showbie and the teacher opens them up on his/her iPad. They can then annotate with their voice, pen and text. The book can then be sent back to the pupils using Showbie. The pupil can either change the original book and delete the annotated one or change the annotated book and delete the original.

The screenshot shows a book of a Science experiment. The teacher can annotate with arrows but also add audio feedback. All elements of Book Creator can be deleted so the pupil can restore any annotated book to the original.

This is obviously not a new idea but the pen tool has certainly made this quicker in a widely used app such as Book Creator.
