#"Storytelling is a powerful way to inspire students, build community and give children a voice.  There are a few great apps that help students of all ages write and tell their own stories (Shadow Puppet, Toontastic) and a new app that I absolutely love is Adobe Voice.  This free iPad app is very user friendly and makes the storytelling process simple for children young and old.  Kids can add pictures, text, and even choose from different icons to bring their stories to life.  Adobe Voice has an easy recording feature for students to add their voice as narration.  There is a music library and a selection of themes for users to pick out and include in their final product."

I once held a job where my title was “School of the Future Technology Architect.” I’m a believer in instruction that is, as the buzzwords go, data driven, adaptive, personalized, one-to-one, online, blended, flipped, and gamified.

In this talk, Sugata Mitra will take us through the origins of schooling as we know it, to the dematerialisation of institutions as we know them. Thirteen years of experiments in children's education takes us through a series of startling results – children can self-organise their own learning, they can achieve educational objectives on their own, they can read by themselves. Finally, the most startling of them all: groups of children with access to the internet can learn anything by themselves. From the slums of India, to the villages of India and Cambodia, to poor schools in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Italy, to the schools of Gateshead and the rich international schools of Washington and Hong Kong, Sugata's experimental results show a strange new future for learning.

These components are often highlighted in Digital Citizenship programs, but in tradition-bound K12 education, we often deride social media as trite or ineffective.

Many students still do not understand the limitations of finding information on the free web. Google is about the extent of it and if it isn't found in the first few results, it does not exist or is too hard to find (or worse still, what is found must be "it.").

 

From article: "We need to ensure that they know how to evaluate a website, a blog post, a tweet, a Facebook entry. These evaluative skills transfer cross curricularly and prepare students for the broader world of online communication."

"Today while I was browsing through my Twitter feeds I came across this fabulous Bloom's Taxonomy wheel of apps shared by Anthony. If you still recall, some previous versions of this wheel have already been featured here in Bloom's Taxonomy for Teachers section .

As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps. And because the the visual is not hyperlinked, I went ahead and provided the links for each of these apps in the lists below. Enjoy"

Because of the considerable feedback we received from participants in our 5 W's of Personalized Learning eCourse about our first and second versions of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. Explains a lot about how digital tech can help, though on investigation this seems to be a model developed seemingly from nowhere without much academic work behind it. Example of a simple model stating the obvious? Does it matter that it's origins are hazy? Having had the chance to look into it and its creator, it's interesting to note how popular it is and how accepted it is, without much critique. Is it really that great a model?! Just wondering! Raises a lot of questions.

Very useful for fieldtrips and site -based learning activities - the app allows you to record the location, a map, a photo and notes about the location in a single "postcard" style image.  Geological survey, environmental outings, etc could all be recorded with this innovative, yet very simple application.

The usual term is a digital native–students born into our digital, connected, and uber-social world who have always had Wikipedia to ask questions, and Google to bail them out.

There is nuance to this phenomenon that can distract a bit from the big picture. As with so many complex issues, it is tempting to over-generalize things—claims that 21st century students need to be taught with 21st century tools, or raging against the machine and forcing students to use books, dammit.
