Digital technologies and the tensions between research and teaching | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

At Cardiff University, the Digidol team are investigating how what they call "digital literacy" can be embedded in all staff and students across all levels and areas of the university. The project is one of 12 being funded at different institutions by JISC, an expert on information and digital technologies for education and research, and I interviewed members of the team for one of a series of podcasts for the organisation recently.

Digital Literacy & Common Core

Digital Literacy & Common Core | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

Earlier this week I happened to overhear a conversation about digital literacy and the Common Core. The person asking the question was curious what exactly the Common Core Standards said about digital literacy. As I listened to the conversation unfold I found a group of smart, passionate educators focusing all of their attention on access to digital tools.

"We would like to say a huge thank you to all the researchers who gave up their time to take part in yesterday’s workshop exploring digital literacy. We are using the valuable information gathered to establish a baseline of attitudes and practices amongst researchers to digital technology. Representatives ranged from postgraduate students through to early stage researchers, mid-career and senior research staff. This varied group provided us with a broad range of views and illuminating discussion on the value and application of technology for research work."

How Students Use Technology [INFOGRAPHIC]

How Students Use Technology [INFOGRAPHIC] | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
It’s clear that today’s students rely heavily on electronic devices even when they’re not incorporated in the classroom. In one survey of college students, 38% said they couldn’t even go 10 minutes without switching on some sort of electronic device.

But how students are using their devices, how technology is affecting their educational experience, and what effect it has on their well-being are questions that are harder to answer. In the infographic below, online higher education database Onlineeducation.net has summed up some of the existing research on these points.

New York Times - If Twitter Is a Work Necessity

New York Times - If Twitter Is a Work Necessity | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
Pamela Tate, president and chief executive of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, based in Chicago, said digital literacy, including understanding social networking, is now a required skill.

“They are essential skills that are needed to operate in the world and in the workplace,” she said. “And people will either need to learn through formal training or through their networks or they will feel increasingly left out.”

For most people looking for a job, she said, it is vital that they understand how to use LinkedIn and other social tools to network and present themselves online. “If you don’t have a LinkedIn or Facebook account, then employers often don’t have a way to find out about you,” she said.

What are the copyright issues in lending Kindles and ebooks to our students? > JISC Legal > View Detail | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

"Lending Kindles preloaded with third party content, such as an ebook currently in copyright, via a library or learning centre, would breach the current stated Kindle terms and conditions of use as far as UK users are concerned. The Kindle terms and conditions state that the digital content is for personal use only and in terms of the accepted definition of personal use in UK copyright law, it is unlikely that this extends to the personal use of one e-book (purchased by an institution as account holder) by a large group of learners."

College Students Now Prefer Reading Digital Books to Print, Survey Finds | Spotlight on Digital Media and Learning

College Students Now Prefer Reading Digital Books to Print, Survey Finds | Spotlight on Digital Media and Learning | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

"Looking closer at readership of digital books, here are some of the findings:
Seven in 10 college students (70%) have read digital textbooks, compared to 62% a year ago.
Six in 10 high school seniors (58%) have read digital textbooks, compared to 41% a year ago.
Among those students who had previously read a digital textbook, eight in 10 college students (81%) and two-thirds of high school seniors (66%) have read a digital textbook this school year (since September 2011).
Almost six in 10 college students prefer a digital format when reading books for fun (57%) or textbooks for class (58%), while one-third say that they prefer print. This trend can be seen among high school seniors as well, and is mostly driven by an increase in the preference to use tablets for reading.
Other studies have found that e-textbooks still face several obstacles to overcome before digital textbook distribution models become mainstream on college campuses..."

The digital economy: Yes, we're failing you. | ZDNet

The digital economy: Yes, we're failing you. | ZDNet | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
It may not have been required in the economy 40 years ago, but now, it is these skills which can make you an enticing prospect to employers — all the more important for a generation stuck in the mire of a stagnant economy.

Research from the European Commission has once again highlighted these concerns in a new report.

Without computer skills now considered ‘basic’, both school leavers and graduates are not acquiring the knowledge and ability which are now arguably as important as basic literacy and math.

The Commission estimates that by 2015, at least 700,000 of young people will leave education without these skills. Faced with over 100,000 vacancies in the UK alone that require specialized computing skills and 24 million out of work in Europe, even if this figure is modest. In terms of a global digital economy, it will have a strong detrimental impact to many countries in the EU.

Seven Pillars of Information Literacy model being additionally envisaged through a Digital Literacy lens

We exchanged views on whether people see digital literacy as a subset of Information Literacy and other academic literacies and whether that matters and acknowledged that the projects are a useful way in to discussing such wider and deeper literacies. The first meeting resulted in the Seven Pillars of Information Literacy model being additionally envisaged through a Digital Literacy lens. This adds to the exisiting core model and the research lens. This Digital literacy lens document has been already been circulated to other professional organisations and another round of consultation of Library schools for example is now planned. Comments form anyone are welcomed. We may also look at case studies to expand on some aspects and attributes.

Exeter CASCADE » Cascade out and about – an update on project wanderings

Exeter CASCADE » Cascade out and about – an update on project wanderings | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

It’s been a busy few weeks for the project. First we submitted our baseline report to the JISC, which has now been synthesised into a sector summary report, forthcoming soon. Some of the key findings of the Exeter audit process are echoed nationally, while some are relatively unique. For example, the preference for public, third party, cloud and open source applications among researchers was echoed by the Vitae survey. The emergence of mobile and social technologies was also matched by other findings. All the surveys I have seen confirmed that technology adoption is overhwhelmingly self-directed and peer-supported. But projects differ in the groups of staff/students they are working with, and our focus on PGRs has given us some particular insights into how research practice is changing...
