Teaching with Social Networks: Establishing a Social Contract | EDUCAUSE.edu | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

This ECAR research bulletin discusses the use of student-developed social contracts to support a vital online community of inquiry. In blended classes—which combine co-present and web-mediated interaction—contracts that address both settings are particularly effective. This bulletin provides examples of successful student social contracts and describes students’ views on the impact of the social contract on their learning.

Staff and student engagement in digital literacies, with UAL academic leaders, academics and students | DIAL

Staff and student engagement in digital literacies, with UAL academic leaders, academics and students | DIAL | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

I was recently invited to present at the academic leaders forum 29 June 2012 in Chesnut (by invitation of the deputy Rector via a staff development forum meeting), this was an extremely timely opportunity to catch all the UAL academic leaders in one shot, UALs Rector, deputy Rector and students union President were also present. Before my presentation, I had the great pleasure of hearing the keynote presentation of Ronald Barnett on student engagement and the issues and challenges we all face now and in the future, Ron did a great Job of provoking thought and reflection and his ‘thinking aloud’ style presentation provided an interesting overview of a student’s perspective although not addressing the digital perspective as such. As Ron talked I noted down key words/themes relating to student engagement which I thought could be flipped and easily identified as also being related to ‘staff & student engagement’ in terms of the DL challenges DIAL has identified to date...

Undergraduate student Rachel joins the Digitally Ready team | Digitally Ready | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

Hello everyone! My name is Rachel Glover. I am happy to have now started my long-awaited placement working in the Centre for the Development of Teaching and Learning on the project, Digitally Ready. I will be looking into how work placements aid students in developing their digital literacies. And in week two I have already got stuck into a lot of interesting tasks!

I am a second year undergraduate studying Politics and International Relations. The project appealed to me for a number of reasons. I have an interest in social and digital media and the impact that this is having on our day-to-day lives. It has become such an inherent part of our society and is inextricably linked to so many things, including politics and education. My dissertation that I have recently started is going to explore how social media has revolutionised the way in which American Presidential candidates campaign.

Innovations in ICT teaching: a Guardian roundtable debate

Innovations in ICT teaching: a Guardian roundtable debate | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
Children are to be taught how to programme computers in a move to create the technological innovators of the future...

Last August, Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google, ignited debate among educators, industrialists and policy-makers when he revealed that he was "flabbergasted to learn that, today, computer science isn't even taught as standard in UK schools". He went on: "Your IT curriculum focuses on teaching how to use software, but gives no insight into how it's made. That is just throwing away your great computing heritage."

RU Digitally Ready, at HEA conference 2012 | Digitally Ready | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
This week was the HEA conference in Manchester.  I was presenting a Digital Literacies workshop, called RU Digitally Ready?

The theme for the conference was Great Expectations, something which I believe sums up the potential mindset of our incoming students with the change in fees, but which also fits with the University of Reading’s aspirations for all its members, both staff and students, when it comes to improving our levels of Digital Literacy.

Developments in Digital Literacy - RSC Wales | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

There have been a lot of developments around the topic of Digital Literacy lately and this post will look at the two strands of work I have been involved with, the JISC Developing Digital Literacies Programme and the RSC Digital Literacy working group. Both these programmes have had a lot of outputs so far (and not even finished yet!) so I have tried to make some of the resources easier to find as well as highlight the most effective and efficient ways of keeping up to date with developments.

his week I have been lucky enough to be working with the 1st year students from the School of Systems Engineering in their post-exam period. The Digital Department » Blog Archive » Enabling innovation and change – Part 1 | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

At the ICA Network conference: Educating the Net Generation in the Life Sciences at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano last week one of the main themes was how universities can support innovation in today’s fast moving and emerging educational environments characterised by social media and cloud services. This is undoubtedly a challenge. I gave a keynote on our The Digital Department (TDD) project and how we were beginning to uncover a complex pattern of digital literacies and identities that needed to be developed and supported to enable any significant change in this area. I admitted this could be overwhelming but TDD also points to a community-based model of change which might help us achieve our ambitions.

Why we need to include digital literacy in medical education

Why we need to include digital literacy in medical education | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

Posted by Dr. Bertalan Meskó in Medical education

I’ve been working on including digital literacy in medical curriculum for long years now. It’s not the fault of medical professionals if they don’t know how to deal with e-patients as they have never been trained to acquire such skills. Here is one perfect example underscoring the notion I just described. An excerpt from one of my recent Twitter discussions.

The Active Class » Digital distraction in the classroom

The Active Class » Digital distraction in the classroom | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

At the start of my summer class this year, a quiet and diligent student asked a seemingly innocuous question. “Do you allow use of laptops in class?” Sure, I said, as long as they’re on task. I had my TA sit behind her a few times and double-check — she was indeed simply using the online lecture material and taking notes as she went. I was satisfied. And she was the only student bringing a laptop to class.

But somehow, around week 2 or 3 (out of 5), something changed...

Do Our Students Have PLN's?

Do Our Students Have PLN's? | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
Teachers need to make sure that they are fostering strong PLN's in the classroom because as much as it is important to learn from a teacher, we also understand that the conversations students have with one another can be invaluable as well.

Through social media and other venues there is a lot of talk about personal learning networks (PLN). A PLN consists of all of the places where you get your information and its how educators tap into educational conversations with colleagues near and far. It's a fantastic way to stay current in our practice as educators. As a principal, I believe it's highly important to be connected so I can bring the most current and best resources to staff and in return they share their best resources with me.

Digital Literacy is Good, but Fluency is Better

Digital Literacy is Good, but Fluency is Better | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
In their new book, Digital Fluency: Building Success in the Digital Age, Christian Briggs and Kevin Makice offer a roadmap to digital fluency for individuals and organizations.

So what's the difference between digital literacy and digital fluency? According to Briggs and Makice, literacy means you know what tools to use and how to use them, while fluency means you also know when and why to use them. They also offer this core definition: "Digital fluency is the ability to reliably achieve desired outcomes through use of digital technology." Under this definition, fluency also includes the ability to choose the right tools and use multiple tools in combination.

iTunes UAL ? | UAL digital baseline

iTunes UAL ? | UAL digital baseline | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

I think before jumping into iTunes U, UAL really needs to have a plan/strategy for how it manages its internal video production and how it archives/makes available and licenses video it produces. Ual really needs to establish a unified cross college systems for regular video production and archiving, then it can select from its own Ual video pot the ‘best/most appropriate’ videos to feed through to commercial channels in specific contexts like iTunes (learning videos, marketing etc), YouTube etc.
