Social media in education: a student perspective | Jisc

Social media in education: a student perspective | Jisc | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
We recently launched a call to find 50 of the most influential HE professionals on social media. We've been hearing from all kinds of academics and lecturers about the ways in which they use social media to generate change or improve things in their institutions - but what do the students think? We took the opportunity to speak to some students taking part in Jisc's Summer of Student Innovation to find out.
Anthony Beal's insight:

Interesting that there seems to be more use, by some students, of Facebook rather than Twitter for studying. One student talks about setting up revision groups on Facebook and crowdsourcing answers to past exam papers.

Lectures are praised for making the effort to go on social media courses. One student commented how useful it is when her lecturer uses Twitter hash tags to pass on information regarding courses and modules. This includes links to journals and academic papers.

23 Things for Professional Development: Schedule for CPD23 2012

23 Things for Professional Development: Schedule for CPD23 2012 | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

Here are the Things that we will be exploring during the 23 Things for Professional Development course this summer. There is real a mixture of stuff: some web 2.0 and/or social media gadgets and gizmos, and some ways of developing your career by more 'traditional', less technology-focussed, means. Throughout the programme will be emphasising how these Things can help your professional development, although you're likely to find lots of tools useful in other ways, too! We are taking the Things at a slightly slower pace this time around, although the original posts from last year will remain in place if you prefer to go at your own pace.

The Teacher’s Guide To Digital Citizenship - free curriculum

The Teacher’s Guide To Digital Citizenship - free curriculum | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
How you act online is important. Not just because everything is stored, backed up, and freely available to anyone with a keyboard. But because your online reputation is actually just your reputation. There’s really no difference between online and offline anymore.

In an effort to keep everyone behaving, Microsoft has just unveiled a new (free) curriculum that’s all about digital citizenship, intellectual property rights, and creative content. It offers cross-curricular classroom activities that align with the AASL and ISTE national academic standards. So far, more than 6,500 people have registered to use the curriculum. No matter how you feel about Microsoft, this free offering is worth checking out. You’ll have to register an account but after that it’s easy to find, select, download, and implement some of the objectives presented.

"Interesting to see the University of Aberystwyth Social Media guidelines for staff at http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/social-media/onlinesafety/, and to compare them with UCL guidelines at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/social-media/guidelines. Two quite different approaches!"

Have we the right balance between open education and commercial social media? | process.arts

Have we the right balance between open education and commercial social media? | process.arts | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

More and more universities seem to be promoting the use of commercial social media sites in the curriculum, mostly for communication and rich media sharing, could this present problems in the future? Its clear the university IT frameworks and ambitions are no match in the commercial social media world.

Are universities interested in questioning or exploring social media use in education and are they researching how to create their own in-house or sector social media platforms for the content management of files, communities, images, online video archives etc.

The fame monster: Lady Gaga, social media and online reputation

"Do we really need measures of online reputation? Can our worth be measured by the amount of Twitter followers we have or by how many +1s we receive on Google+?

Klout, Peerindex and other social reputation measuring sites are constantly bombarding web users with statistics about their 'true reach', 'amplification' and 'influence'. It all sounds very grand. And yet what is the actual value of these metrics? What does it mean that I currently have a Klout score of 60? This number is calculated among other things, on an analysis of my recent web activity on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ over the last 90 days."
