How BYOD Programs Can Fuel Inquiry Learning

How BYOD Programs Can Fuel Inquiry Learning | digital literacy, e-learning, ICT in education | Scoop.it
The opportunity to extend access to technology in the classroom and at home is enticing, but school districts can get hung up on important details like providing a strong network, making sure each child has a device, and questions about around distraction. Of course, no one answer will work for all teachers or students, but one guiding principle that's shown to work is for schools to focus on how mobile technology will help shift instruction to be more collaborative, learner-driven and inquiry-based.

It's bold, it's colourful, and it's clear. Well done to all at the OERu for creating a fresh, attractive and easy-to-navigate website which contains information about an interesting array of upcoming OER-based courses that can be done for credit through OERu partner institutions.

Note that the website URL is oeruniversitas.org - in keeping with the consortium's new name.

Digital Reading Skills | Delta Publishing - English Language Teaching

Digital Reading Skills | Delta Publishing - English Language Teaching | digital literacy, e-learning, ICT in education | Scoop.it

We take it for granted as English language teachers that we need to develop our students’ reading skills, but in most cases the nearest our students get to reading online is a printed version of a web page pre selected by their teacher. At best they may actually get to see a pre selected page on the screen of a computer, but is this enough to really develop their digital literacies?

An article Nik Peachey wrote in 2010, but which is still relevant today (perhaps more than ever) now that the facilities certainly do exist in many places to push students (and teachers) to do more to develop digital reading skills.

The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: The Science of Paper versus Screens: Scientific American

The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: The Science of Paper versus Screens: Scientific American | digital literacy, e-learning, ICT in education | Scoop.it

Why not keep paper and evolve screen-based reading into something else entirely? Screens obviously offer readers experiences that paper cannot. Scrolling may not be the ideal way to navigate a text as long and dense as Moby Dick, but the New York Times, Washington Post, ESPN and other media outlets have created beautiful, highly visual articles that depend entirely on scrolling and could not appear in print in the same way.

from Nik Peachey---this article compares screen reading with paper-based text

Christy P.Novack's curator insight, December 9, 2013 12:10 AM

A detailed paper discussing screens vs paper. Lots of other links included. There is no research paper connected with article. I did a paper on practice modalites that involved print text vs media for learning and engagement. More papers are needed out there on such topics, as technology research studies can quickly become outdated.

Mirna Goldberger's curator insight, December 20, 2013 11:21 AM

I am definitely not made to scroll, my brain prefers printed paper.  I cannot focus and retain as well, when I read online.

Twitter Aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy for Your Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Twitter Aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy for Your Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | digital literacy, e-learning, ICT in education | Scoop.it

by Med Karbach

Thinking about using Twitter with your students ? The visual below is one of the best guide I have come across online. The graphic is created by Langwitches and provides a cognitive incentive for those reluctant teachers out there to start using social media with their students and particularly Twitter.

Langwitches started her graphic by outlining some of the reasons why as a teacher you should be engaged in a tweeting experience with your students. Tweeting, as is shown here, helps you cultivate a wide range of important literacies including : digital literacy, information literacy, network literacy and also promotes some other skills such as critical thinking and reading and writing skills.

In the second part of the graphic Langwitches introduced the Twitter routine and talked about some of the things students need to keep in mind while using Twitter and then at the third part she placed some Twitter practices along a continuum of thinking skills with lower order thinking skills in one end and higher order thinking skills at the other.

Langwiches has also recently created a wonderful visual on visible thinking routines. I recommend that you check it.

VISUAL LITERACY

Demonstrate the ability to interpret, recognize, appreciate, and understand information presented through visible actions, objects and symbols, natural or man-made

Peter Evans's curator insight, November 26, 2013 8:47 AM

I'd suggest a lot of the more innovative university programmes are already doing much of what is suggested here. One thing to emphasise is supporting students to use digital tools specifically for learning as they generally already know how to use these tools. In otherwords, while students may often be digitally competent, they are often less digitally literate in terms of learning processes. Also, what refer to PDAs - surely old tech?

Miep Carstensen's curator insight, December 1, 2013 11:14 PM

Sound advice for teachers to incorprate these core competencies in their teaching programmes.
