Why did my satirical article about racism lead to me being banned from Facebook?

Why did my satirical article about racism lead to me being banned from Facebook? | Digital Literacies information sources | Scoop.it
A few weeks ago, when the computer AlphaGo beat the (human) Go world champion, some of the more sensationalist media commentators asked whether one day computers would overtake humans entirely, and perhaps even enslave us. I remember standing in the kitchen of my flat, laughing at the sci-fi absurdity of this idea - little suspecting that within days I would be wondering whether the Algorithmic Tyranny was already underway, and whether free and open political discussion had already become its victim.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Useful to talk about censorship and control of your data.  The orginal piece is here http://overheard.liketodiscover.com/this-guys-hilarious-anti-racist-message-has-gone-totally-viral-on-facebook/

Are we innovation ready?

Fiona Harvey's insight:

An interesting position paper from San Jose State, not sure of the date but I'm guessing 2013/14 because of the Mooc references.  This does have relevancy in UK, not the Moocs but the concepts behind readying universities in changing to meet the needs of society.  In particular the references to styles of learning and delivery. UK quality assurance processes ensure that what we do with new technologies and processes should mean that we enhanc existing practices.  Worth a read for ideas on how to adapt to your country context.

UCISA Social Media Toolkit - a practical guide for achieving benefits and managing risk

This Toolkit stems from growing interest in the use of social media within the UCISA community. With institutional stakeholders looking increasingly to their information services departments for support in this area, our members sought a reference guide to help them answer a range of questions on related topics. More than that, however, they were seeking practical, contextual examples of use that would inspire others within their institution to take advantage of the affordances of a set of tools that offer new forms of engagement and ways to enhance many aspects of everyday business practice. We would like to thank the numerous UCISA colleagues, and others within the wider higher education community, who have contributed to the production of this Toolkit by providing examples and reviewing content. We hope the examples given here will encourage many more of you to try new approaches to supporting core university functions via social media tools.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Great new resource with clear sections and useful information.  It was very nice of them to acknowledge everyones contributions.

After a social media mishap, 28% of companies have reported damage to their brand, or a loss of customer trust averaging a cost of over $638,000.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Great set of tips for those interested in using social media to gain a reputation.  Can be useful for educators as I have been at conferences where the hashtag has been trending and someone tweets something just to promote themselves with very little relevance to the proceedings. Bad form, and we all have seen through it.

U of California professors object to new system -- installed secretly -- to monitor emails and use of computer networks. University cites security needs and pledges to protect privacy.

Privacy issue or security. Either way should be open and transparent the intention of the use of the monitoring - to prevent or to catch people out. Not very supportive if the latter. Prevention is better than cure.

Accenture-Being-Digital-Workforce-2015-Report.pdf

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Some good stuff here. How digital is your leadership?  Lead from the top. This report also includes benefits of digital including what employees think.  There is also a reference to moocs as being a 'new way of learning' not really.  The model we have seen proliferating isn't new, its a broadcast model.  They are right to look at it though as it could lead to change. Worth reading, not very long with useful highlights.
