"The average life of a web page is about 100 days before it's either changed or deleted," says Kahle. "Even if it's supported by big companies: Google Video came down, Yahoo Video came down, Apple went and wiped out all the pages in Mobile Me." Capturing this transient web was Kahle's original mission for the Internet Archive when he founded it in 1996. Nearly two decades later, the 53-year-old compares his organization to a "Library of Alexandria, version two."

It’s a question not many consider given how embedded the internet is in their lives. The typical web user has 25 online accounts, ranging from email to social media profiles and bank accounts, according to a 2007 study from Microsoft. But families, companies and legislators are just starting to sort out who owns and has access to these accounts after someone has died.

A Philadelphia woman's collection of more than 40,000 VHS and Betamax tapes will live on forever thanks to a group of volunteers and digitization. The Internet Archive is a San Francisco-based nonprofit that catalogs everything from websites to TV shows. Michael Metelits contacted the organization last fall about the incredible compilation of recorded television programs spanning almost four decades that was left to his family by his mother, Marion Stokes, who passed away in December 2012.
