Students’ Perceptions and Experiences of Mobile Learning

Students’ Perceptions and Experiences of Mobile Learning | Digital learning in higher ed | Scoop.it

This study focused on how students perceive the use of mobile devices to create a personalized learning experience outside the classroom. Fifty-three students in three graduate TESOL classes participated in this study. All participants completed five class projects designed to help them explore mobile learning experiences with their own mobile devices, incorporating technologies such as YouTube and VoiceThread. We identified characteristics of these mobile users in Mobile Language Learning (MLL), and the results illuminate how MLL opens up new pedagogical scaffoldings.

"Although many educators and teachers already use technology in class, they shouldconsider modifyingexisting class activities to make them more practical and meaningful for language learning when usingmobile technologies. How students use mobile technologyas a learning tool is dependent on their ever-changing relationship with thesemobile technologies. Teachers should remember the technologicaldemands of mobile devices when planning activities in order to give the activities a valuable pedagogicalcomponent while being easy to use."

I get so excited when I see more developments on tyring to intergrate technology and education. This is because by combining learning with education, scholars get the opportunity of understanding academics through everyday technology such as their mobile phones. This article also interests me because I am interested in finding out how technology can assist teachers in making subjects such as maths and science more easier for learners.

For shorter courses connected mobile learning has advantages. For more substantial courses digital learning material needs to available offline.

"The take-away is that technology alone can’t solve problems. Simply having access to infinite amounts of information does us no good unless we know how to find the information we need. Having the information we need means nothing if we don’t know how to interpret it, to synthesize it, and to present it in meaningful ways. And even if we do that, new information is meaningless unless others have the context and the means to learn from it, use it, and act upon it."

 

THIS is why I teach science. I work with non-majors Biology students, and they often complain about how they don't like science, they don't understand it, and they don't want to take my course. By the end of it though, they understand why a liberal arts degree includes "a science course with a lab." This teaches them to look at information in a new way. Even though they may not choose Biology as a major, Biology touches our lives every day. We make decisions based upon the information we have, and if we can't understand the vast amounts of information coming at us, we may make bad decisions. I teach students to act on information in new ways.

Should universities use this technology to credential students out of taking courses, or help them build upon what they know? Or help instructors challenge each student, the way they would be at a private university? I'm concerned that some universities are using this to limit time in the classroom - which shouldn't be the school's role.

Amazing insight into the university lecture! This is part of what I'm going to change with my website launch in the fall. I want to do the lecture in 7 minute chunks, and this article suggests two minutes in between to let the students make notes, ask questions, reflect, or do an activity. And teach them to take notes!
